Louisville no longer recruiting Blakeney; Dozier still in the mix?

According to Steve Jones of the Courier-Journal, UofL has decided to move on from Antonio Blakeney. They will not continue to recruit him after the 5-star shooting guard decommitted. This is not a big surprise, as Coach Pitino very rarely continues to recruit guys that decommit. Quentin Snider was more of an exception and not the rule.

Last night 5 star SG Antonio Blakeney announced his decommitment from Louisville (which shocked nobody). The Cards still have Donovan Mitchell, Deng Adel, and Raymond Spalding in the fold but will look to sign at least one more. Let’s take a look at the candidates to fill that spot.

Most Likely:

PJ Dozier

Position: PG/SG

6’7/ 180 lbs

The Cards were in a very good position to land Dozier before the commitment of Antonio Blakeney. Some believe the Cards may have even been very close to landing a commitment from the 6’7 guard. Dozier had a visit to Louisville set up for October 3rd but will now visit UNC that day. Dozier’s father told Steve Jones of the Courier Journal that the Dozier family had not heard from the Cards since AB commitment but would be open to listening to the Cards again. Many people including 2015 commit Donovan Mitchell have made it known that they would love to see Dozier in a Louisville jersey. The question now is can Pitino make it happen.

Antonio Blakeney has just opened up his recruitment, according to ESPN’s Reggie Rankin. Rick Pitino was supposed to go visit him in Florida on Wednesday. Obviously, that will not happen now. Here are some tweets from this happening.

This has a very BLUE feel to it if you ask me.

The Stemmys (My Midweek Awards)

red carpet 2

In this week’s edition of The Stemmys we touch on recruiting, Louisville Football and fantasy football!

The “Who’d you say can’t recruit?!” Award: Bobby Petrino

All we have heard is how Bobby isn’t getting it done on the recruiting trail. Well he shut that door this week with an emphatic SLAM!! Just this week alone Petrino landed former 4 star All-American WR Paul Harris and went into Bama country to steal 4 star LB Amonte Caban. The Cards now have the #27 class according to Rivals.com. Still say Bobby can’t recruit……….I’ll wait.

The Next Level Moment Award: Jeff Walz landing Asia Durr

This week Louisville Womens Basketball Coach Jeff Walz took the next step to winning a National Title when he landed the Nations #1 player Asia Durr. Walz has had some very talented teams while at Louisville but always seemed to be missing that one piece. Now Walz has that piece and the #1 recruiting class in the Nation. Ah I can see the Banner now.

Justin Time For The Weekend: 9/5/14

Justin Time

I started this new weekly blog last week, and I must say that I think I am going to enjoy doing it. If not, you will know because it will just stop. But the point of it is just to give my thoughts and opinions on whatever comes to mind, obviously focusing on UofL sports. But rather than just posting facts and passing along information, this is more of an open forum for me. Like with most of these types of posts that I do, I go into it with a little plan, and just start typing and see what happens. It seems to work better that way for me. Maybe there should be more of a plan, I don’t know. I haven’t taken 1 journalism class in my life so I am not 100% sure how that whole process works. I will just type what comes to mind, and hopefully you enjoy reading it. If not, here is my apology: sorry. Now, onto this week’s topics for you to read about Justin time for the weekend!

The 6-0 start is there for the taking

When the football schedule came out, we were all excited to see the big names like Florida State, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Miami. We realized we finally had a good schedule and we are not in the AAC or Big East anymore. The more you looked at the schedule, the more you may have noticed that the second half of the schedule is much tougher than the first half. I couldn’t help but think that if we just got by Miami, a 6-0 start was very possible. Well, we got by Miami for sure. Now just take a look at the next 5 games.

Antonio Blakeney commits to Louisville!

Antonio Blakeney

Antonio Blakeney has just committed to the University of Louisville! After having a great visit this past weekend, it was thought that he may commit soon, but not THIS soon. The 5-star shooting guard has been Rick Pitino’s top priority for quite some time now, and he could vault the class to the #1 ranked class in the country.

Antonio Blakeney: What CSZ is Hearing

Antonio Blakeney

5-star shooting guard Antonio Blakeney visited UofL’s campus on Sunday and Monday. He was at the Miami game with UofL guard Terry Rozier, who is said to be a good friend of Blakeney. There hasn’t been too much public chatter since his visit ended, as he or his family haven’t done any media interviews just yet.

By Justin Renck and Steve Rummage:

In our basketball recruiting notebook, we fill you in on where the Cards stand with their top targets in the class of 2015. This week we we have a big target who was scheduled to visit, but now will push that back. But on the flip side, another 5-star guard will be in town this coming weekend!

Point Guard

Donovan Mitchell Donovan Mitchell (Commit) – It has been fun watching Mitchell’s rise from sleeper to star. At last week’s Elite 24 game the 6’3 guard added to that status. Mitchell finished 3rd in the Elite 24 dunk contest and completely stole the show with this dunk that made the ESPN SportsCenter top 10:

As far as recruiting goes, Mitchell seems to be recruiting PJ Dozier, Derrick Jones, and Antonio Blakeney to Louisville with him. Mitchell has a close friendship with Jones and Dozier, but is intrigued with playing along side a guard with the talent of Blakeney. One thing for sure is which ever guard ends up grabbing that last scholarship is sure to have an absolute stud (Mitchell) playing beside them. -Steve Rummage

Antonio Blakeney to visit Louisville Labor Day Weekend

Antonio Blakeney

Well Rick Pitino will still be hosting a big-time recruit on Labor Day Weekend, but just not the one we expected. Perry Dozier was supposed to be making an official visit, but he has pushed back all of his visits and will likely check out UofL on October 3rd. However, 5-star shooting guard Antonio Blakeney will be on campus this weekend at UofL.

Point Guard

Donovan Mitchell Donovan Mitchell (Commit) – Mitchell had another impressive week, leading his East team to the Nike Global Challenge Finals. In Friday’s Semi-Final, Mitchell put up 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal in a win against the South team featuring Antonio Blakeney and Jaylen Brown. Now Mitchell will turn his attention to the Elite 24 game on August 23rd. -Steve Rummage

In our basketball recruiting notebook, we fill you in on where the Cards stand with their top targets in the class of 2015. The Cards gained their third commit for 2015 this week, and possibly have one more target in mind. Enjoy this week’s notebook!

Point Guard

Donovan Mitchell Donovan Mitchell (Commit) – Rick Pitino got his guy when PG Donovon Mitchell announced he had committed to Louisville. Mitchell gave his commitment to the Cards this past weekend while on campus for his official visit. While Mitchell cut his list to 5 last week, the 6’3 PG told Steve Jones of the Courier Journal he “had been set on committing to U of L for about the last two weeks”. In the same article, Mitchell told Jones, “I had a dream I was playing in front of 22,000 (at the KFC Yum! Center), and that’s when I told my parents that I want to commit to Louisville.” Mitchell’s commitment to Louisville drew high praise from people around the country, including the ACC Sports Journal who tweeted this about the Cards 2015 class, “With Deng Adel, Raymond Spalding, and Donovan Mitchell locked in,  Louisville may have the top 2015 class in the ACC. Pitino getting it done”. This week Donovan Mitchell was also named to the Elite 24 game held on August 23rd in Brooklyn. Look for Mitchell to vault up the updated rankings in the coming weeks. -Steve Rummage

Louisville no longer in the mix for Isaiah Briscoe?

247sports.com

247sports.com

According to Adam Zagoria Louisville is no longer in the mix for 5 star PG Isaiah Briscoe. In this weeks CSZ recruiting Notebook we said we should find out the answer to the question of just how interested the Cards were in Briscoe with Trier pledging to Arizona. Looks like we now have our answer. The more the summer went on the less Coach Pitino watched the NJ point guard so this isn’t to big of a shock. It looks like Pitino and company are going all in to land two of the four out of Donovan Mitchell, PJ Dozier, Prince Ali and Antonio Blakeney. Mitchell, Dozier, Ali and Blakeney will all visit within the month.

In our basketball recruiting notebook, we fill you in on where the Cards stand with their top targets in the class of 2015. With small forward Deng Adel and power forward Raymond Spalding already committed, the focus is now on backcourt players.

Point Guard

Donovan Mitchell – Mitchell cut his list to 5 on Sunday: Louisville, Villanova, FSU, Boston College, and Providence. It is always big news when you make the final 5, but the even bigger news here is the absence of Kansas and UNC. Both came after Mitchell hard in recent weeks but now the Cards look like the lone top tier program left in the race. Providence has spent the most time on Mitchell. The Friers had a coach at every single game the 6’3 point guard played this summer. Mitchell will take an unofficial visit to Villanova today (Monday) before heading to Louisville on Thursday for an official. Nova seems to be in much better position than most think, but look for Pitino and company to try to lock this one up this week if possible. -Steve Rummage

CSZ Basketball Recruiting Notebook 7/28/14

CSZLogoSkyline white 2

By Justin Renck and Steve Rummage:

A few weeks ago we started a new weekly series that will update you on where the Cards stand with their top basketball recruiting targets for the class of 2015. We release a new post every Monday and give any updates there may be. Rather than talk about every recruit out there that Louisville has just talked to or looked at, we will focus on the main guys that the Cards are going after and have a shot at landing. So you can get familiar with these names and not have to worry about 20 different players to learn about.

With the July evaluation period coming to a close, this past week brought us some updates. Enjoy this week’s notebook!

Thursday’s thoughts on AAU Nationals (Antonio Blakeney)

CardinalSportsZone.com

CardinalSportsZone.com

When 5 star SG Antonio Blakeney received an offer from UK earlier this month some wondered if Rick Pitino would back off and move on. Today Pitino answered that question with a resounding NO! Pitino was front and center for all three of Blakeney’s games today and the 6’4 SG did not disappoint.

Cardinalsportszone.com

Cardinalsportszone.com

Blakeney flirted with a triple double in game one before ending with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assist. While shooting around before game two I let Blakeney know just how close he was to the triple double to which he responded with a smile “I’ll get it this game”. Blakeney then took a few minutes to chat with current Louisville SG Terry Rozier. Over 3 games today Blakeney went for 60 plus points and showed the smooth stroke that has #CardNation hoping when it’s all said and done he’s in Red and Black.
