CSZ Basketball Recruiting Notebook 8/4/14

By Justin Renck and Steve Rummage:

In our basketball recruiting notebook, we fill you in on where the Cards stand with their top targets in the class of 2015. With small forward Deng Adel and power forward Raymond Spalding already committed, the focus is now on backcourt players.

Point Guard

Donovan Mitchell – Mitchell cut his list to 5 on Sunday: Louisville, Villanova, FSU, Boston College, and Providence. It is always big news when you make the final 5, but the even bigger news here is the absence of Kansas and UNC. Both came after Mitchell hard in recent weeks but now the Cards look like the lone top tier program left in the race. Providence has spent the most time on Mitchell. The Friers had a coach at every single game the 6’3 point guard played this summer. Mitchell will take an unofficial visit to Villanova today (Monday) before heading to Louisville on Thursday for an official. Nova seems to be in much better position than most think, but look for Pitino and company to try to lock this one up this week if possible. -Steve Rummage

A few weeks ago we started a new weekly series that will update you on where the Cards stand with their top basketball recruiting targets for the class of 2015. We release a new post every Monday and give any updates there may be. Rather than talk about every recruit out there that Louisville has just talked to or looked at, we will focus on the main guys that the Cards are going after and have a shot at landing. So you can get familiar with these names and not have to worry about 20 different players to learn about.

With the July evaluation period coming to a close, this past week brought us some updates. Enjoy this week’s notebook!

With the July evaluation period in full swing, this past week brought us a good amount of updates to the notebook. The Cards have landed two commits so far, and spent a lot of time watching some of the top guards in the class. Enjoy this week’s notebook!

Point Guard

Isaiah Bricsoe – Briscoe continued to show why he is a 5-star PG this week, leading his team to the Peach Jam Championship. Briscoe really is the total package when it comes to playing the point guard position. Arizona and Louisville still look like the favorites to land Briscoe. This week Briscoe had this to say about the Cards to Adam Zagoria. “[Pitino] is a Hall of Fame coach. From what I hear, he lets his guards go. I can see that he runs a three-guard offense, lot of pick-and-rolls and things like that. I just want to go somewhere where I can play my game.”  Pitino spent a lot of time watching Briscoe this week and left no doubt that the Cards are VERY interested in him. Briscoe told Steve Jones of the Courier Journal that the Cards played his style of play, so are the feelings mutual? Most are pegging Briscoe to Arizona but if Allonzo Trier were to pop for the Wildcats, keep a very close eye on Briscoe. -Steve Rummage

There weren’t any major changes in the past week, but there are still some updates. The month of July should bring us plenty of new information with AAU season in full swing. There are major camps such as the LeBron James Skills Academy, Peach Jam, and AAU Nationals, which are held in Louisville this year.

HUGE 2015 recruiting day for Louisville basketball tomorrow

Per this Mike Hughes (InsidetheVille.com) tweet the Cards will host two 2015 targets on campus tomorrow:

Deng Adel: Adel is one of the Cards top targets regardless of position so this is a big visit. It had been known that Adel would be visiting soon but with that visit coming as early as tomorrow I wouldn’t expect any commitments from the 6’7 SF. The Cards have a couple things working in their favor with Adel, one they were one of the first schools to recruit him and two Adel’s relationship with Louisville Center Mangok Mathiang. Adel’s 247 Crystal ball is sitting at 100% for the Cards.
