Friday night had Russ vs Gorgui. And it was…what you would expect

It was the last Summer League game for the New Orleans Pelicans and the Minnesota Timberwolves. The game is full of a lot of guys just trying to make the roster, some I haven’t even heard of. I am not on the couch watching the game on my nice TV. And that’s because the game is not even on TV. It is on ESPN3. Sure, I probably could have hooked my computer up to the TV and watched, but then this wouldn’t have been as interesting. So I sit here on my Google Chromebook, headphones in, watching an NBA Summer League game on a Friday night. And you know what? IT WAS AWESOME!

Russ Smith and the Pelicans squared off against Gorgui Dieng and the Timberwolves. Both guys played over 25 minutes in the 40 minute game, so there weren’t many times where neither was on the floor. For what it’s worth, the Timberwolves beat the Pelicans 97-78. Gorgui Dieng finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Russ Smith finished with 21 points and 3 assists.

Cards in the NBA Summer League 7/17/14

Three former Cards were in action on Thursday in the NBA Summer League, and here is how they did…

*Gorgui Dieng – Gorgui posted another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Timberwolves lost 100-86 to the Kings. He also had 3 assists and 3 blocks, along with 5 turnovers. He shot 5-15 from the field and was 5-6 from the free throw line. He started and played 35 minutes. I would say that Gorgui is in line for a very good season. But if Kevin Love does get traded, he could have a great season. The Timberwolves may not, but Gorgui sure will!

Cards in the NBA Summer League 7/16/14

NBA

It was a pretty active day for former Cards in the NBA Summer League on Wednesday. Gorgui Dieng had the best overall game, while Luke Hancock and Kyle Kuric also saw action in their games. Here is how all three did…

*Gorgui Dieng – The big man absolutely dominated the glass, grabbing 19 rebounds to go along with his 13 points as the Timberwolves beat the Suns 86-77. He added 1 assist and 2 steals while shooting 6-13 from the field and 1-2 from the free throw line. He started and played nearly 35 minutes. In 4 games this summer, Gorgui is averaging 10.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. With the win, the Timberwolves advanced in the summer league championship bracket and will face the Sacramento Kings on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Peyton Siva released by Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have decided to release Peyton Siva after he apparently did not do enough this summer to earn a spot on the team. In 3 games, Siva averaged 10 points, 5 assists, and 2.3 rebounds in 23 minutes per game. He also averaged less than 2 turnovers per game (1.6). Not too bad for a point guard.

Russ Smith had one heck of a debut in the NBA Summer League on Friday night. Against the NBA D-League Select, Russ played 27:12 and had 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists, including an assist on the game-winning basket as the Pelicans won 83-81. 10 of his 20 points came in the 4th quarter, and Russ was a key part of an 18-0 run to take the lead near the end of the game.

Here are highlights from that game.

Tuesday saw only one former Card in action, as Peyton Siva and the Pistons beat the Miami Heat 80-78. After two great games to start the summer, this one was cut short. He played 12:38 but left the game with a sore hamstring and did not return. He finished with 2 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound with 1 turnover. He shot 0-3 from the field, including 0-1 from 3-point and was 2-2 from the foul line.

The Pistons are back in action Wednesday evening as they take on the Celtics at 7:00 pm ET on NBA TV. Hopefully Siva is better and can play in this one.

NBA Summer League will be very important for Peyton Siva

Photo: Kevin Liles-USA TODAY Sports

The NBA Summer League’s are always exciting because you have guys out there fighting for a job. If you see a game, you may see about 10-20 people watching on the sidelines, so it may not look like the games mean much. But those guys are out there battling for a roster spot. That will be the case this summer for former Louisville Cardinal Peyton Siva with the Detroit Pistons. Although he played well coming down the stretch last season in Detroit, his contract is not guaranteed, so he is essentially playing to make the team.

In this article by detroitbadboys.com, they write that Siva should have plenty of opportunity to make his case, as Spencer Dinwiddie ruled out for the summer. Dinwiddie was drafted by the Pistons this year in the 2nd round, and he is a 6’6 point guard that played at Colorado. This is from the article:
