CSZ Basketball Recruiting Notebook 7/7/14

By Justin Renck and Steve Rummage:

Last week we started a new weekly series that will update you on where the Cards stand with their top basketball recruiting targets for the class of 2015. We plan to release a new post every Monday and give any updates there may be. Rather than talk about every recruit out there that Louisville has just talked to or looked at, we will focus on the main guys that the Cards are going after and have a shot at landing. So you can get familiar with these names and not have to worry about 20 different players to learn about.

There weren’t any major changes in the past week, but there are still some updates. The month of July should bring us plenty of new information with AAU season in full swing. There are major camps such as the LeBron James Skills Academy, Peach Jam, and AAU Nationals, which are held in Louisville this year.

5-star SF Ray Smith cuts his list to 9 schools

5-star small forward Ray Smith (Class of 2015) just cut his list down to 9 schools, and Louisville is still in the mix. From his top 10 that he released in the middle of May, he dropped Oregon and Wake Forest but added UConn. ESPN ranks him as the 3rd best small forward in the class and the 26th best player overall. 247 Sports is similar, having him as the 5th best small forward and 24th best player in the class.

He is from Las Vegas, NV and is listed at 6’7 and 185 lbs.

Smith will be visiting Louisville sometime in the fall, but he told CSZ that he has to talk to Coach Wyking Jones to figure out the date that he will be here.

Elite 2015 SF will take an official visit to Louisville

Ray Smith

2015 SF Ray Smith will take an official visit to Louisville on Sept. 27th per this Mike Hughes tweet:

As you seen here on CSZ Smith announced recently that the Cards had made his final list of 10 along with many of the elite schools around the country. Most believe this one may come down to the Cards, UCLA, G-Town,  and Arizona so this visit is a good sign for Pitino and company. Smith will also visit UCLA & Georgetown in June and doesn’t have a Arizona visit set up at this time.

On Tuesday night, 5-star (rated by 247sports) small forward Ray Smith tweeted out his top 10 list of schools. The class of 2015 prospect is listed at 6’7 and 185 lbs and is from Las Vegas, Nevada. As a junior at Las Vegas High School, he averaged 24.7 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.

If you aren’t familiar with logos, you have Arizona State, Oregon, Wake Forest, Texas, USC, UCLA, Louisville, Arizona, Georgetown, and California.

The major recruiting sites have Smith as a top 10 small forward in the country for the class of 2015. I am not sure if/when he will narrow his list more, but that is one that we will keep an eye on for sure.
