CSZ Basketball Recruiting Notebook 7/21/14

By Justin Renck and Steve Rummage:

A few weeks ago we started a new weekly series that will update you on where the Cards stand with their top basketball recruiting targets for the class of 2015. We release a new post every Monday and give any updates there may be. Rather than talk about every recruit out there that Louisville has just talked to or looked at, we will focus on the main guys that the Cards are going after and have a shot at landing. So you can get familiar with these names and not have to worry about 20 different players to learn about.

With the July evaluation period in full swing, this past week brought us a good amount of updates to the notebook. The Cards have landed two commits so far, and spent a lot of time watching some of the top guards in the class. Enjoy this week’s notebook!

Point Guard

Isaiah Bricsoe – Briscoe continued to show why he is a 5-star PG this week, leading his team to the Peach Jam Championship. Briscoe really is the total package when it comes to playing the point guard position. Arizona and Louisville still look like the favorites to land Briscoe. This week Briscoe had this to say about the Cards to Adam Zagoria. “[Pitino] is a Hall of Fame coach. From what I hear, he lets his guards go. I can see that he runs a three-guard offense, lot of pick-and-rolls and things like that. I just want to go somewhere where I can play my game.”  Pitino spent a lot of time watching Briscoe this week and left no doubt that the Cards are VERY interested in him. Briscoe told Steve Jones of the Courier Journal that the Cards played his style of play, so are the feelings mutual? Most are pegging Briscoe to Arizona but if Allonzo Trier were to pop for the Wildcats, keep a very close eye on Briscoe. -Steve Rummage

There weren’t any major changes in the past week, but there are still some updates. The month of July should bring us plenty of new information with AAU season in full swing. There are major camps such as the LeBron James Skills Academy, Peach Jam, and AAU Nationals, which are held in Louisville this year.

Wyking Jones sends top UofL Center Target “Funniest Text”

Yesterday Louisville’s top 2015 post target Stephen Zimmerman received the news that he had made the USA Men’s U18 National Team. Upon receiving this news Zimmerman told Adam Zagoria that he received text from “more than 30 coaches”. Coaches from all over were congratulating Zimmerman on the accomplishment but who sent the funniest text of all? That honor would belong to our own Coach Wyking Jones:

(From Zagoria Article)

“Stephen Zimmerman received more than 30 text messages from college coaches after making the USA U18 team, but he said the funniest came from Louisville assistant Wyking Jones.

“Coach Jones from Louisville said if I keep this up then maybe my girlfriend will actually start liking me,’” the 6-foot-11 Zimmerman out of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman said by phone from Colorado Springs, Colo.”

Zimmerman will visit the Cards September 26th and we can only assume Coach Jones will have plenty of one liners ready!

3 UofL basketball targets make USA Men’s U18 National Team (1 surprising cut)

Coach Billy Donovan (Florida) made his final cut down to 12 for the final USA Men’s U18 National Team and a few Louisville Targets made the list. 2015 PG Isaiah Briscoe,2015 SG Allonzo Trier, and 2015 Center Stephen Zimmerman all made the final roster and all are in the mix with the Cards. While Trier and Briscoe have not set up visits to Louisville at this time, Zimmerman will be on campus September 26th.

The most surprising news may not be who made it. but who didn’t. 2015 SG Antonio Blakeney did not make the final team. It has been believed for a long time that Louisville and Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators have been the leaders for Blakeney. Will Donovan cutting Blakeney have any effect? That I don’t know but I can’t imagine this could be anything but good for the Cards.

Top 2015 Center says he will make Official to Louisville

2015 5 star Center Stephen Zimmerman tweeted out tonight that he will make an official to Louisville September 26th.

The 7’0 Zimmerman is regarded by many to be the best Center (or player) in the class of 2015 and would be an absolute monster pick up for Pitino who is poised to land a top 3 class already. The Cardinal Football team will host Wake Forest that weekend so it will be a good time for Zimmerman to see what CardNation is all about. 5 star SF Ray Smith will also be on campus that weekend for the Cards.
