In a wet and wild game the Louisville football team defeated Southern Mississippi Saturday night, 21-17. Heavy storms persisted throughout the entire game impacting the Cardinals passing offense. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was held to only 9 of 13 passing for 85 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Wideout DeVante Parker caught the only Louisville passing touchdown of the game while running back Senorise Perry led the Cardinals with 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Cardinals were constantly challenged by Southern Miss (0-4) and midway through the 2nd quarter Louisville trailed 17-6. However, the Cardinals scored 15 unanswered points to secure a victory and move their record to 5-0 for the first time since 2006. The Cardinals are on a bye week but return to action Oct.13th as they begin conference play at Pittsburgh.
It was also a busy weekend for other Louisville athletic programs. 17th-ranked Louisville volleyball (14-2) was on the road this weekend for a pair of Big East matches. Louisville started the weekend with a Friday night match against South Florida. After losing first set 25-20, the Cardinals won the next three sets to win the match 3-1. The Cardinals were led by senior outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova who recorded 26 kills and 14 digs for her eighth 20-plus kill match. The team also received contributions from Tanya Lukyanenko who had a career- high 14 kills and Caitlin Welch who recorded a team high 22 digs. The Cardinals closed out the weekend Sunday against Pittsburgh. After losing to the Panthers last season, the Cardinals headed into the game with revenge on their minds. With contributions from the entire team, the Cardinals swept the Panthers and recorded their sixth sweep this season. The Cardinals return home this weekend for matches against Seton Hall Saturday and Rutgers Sunday.
The men’s soccer team fell to 5-4 on the season with a Saturday night loss at Rutgers. Senior Greg Cochrane got the Cardinals off to quick start as he scored in the 18th minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. However, in the 27th minute Rutgers scored to tie the game at 1-1. In the second half the Cardinals continued to pressure the Scarlet Knights but could not score. In the 59th minute Rutgers scored on a slow roller to take a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals had chances late but could not convert as they fell 2-1. The Cardinals return to action Wednesday, Oct. 3rd as they host DePaul at 7 p.m.
Women’s soccer fell to 7-3-2 after recording a loss and a tie in Big East action this past weekend. The Cardinals began the weekend Friday in a match at No.19 Marquette. The match was a defensive battle as the first goal was not scored until the 72nd minute when the Golden Eagles placed a ball into the corner of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Marquette scored again in the 83rd minute to take a 2-0 lead and the match. The Cardinals looked to bounce back against South Florida Sunday. South Florida, in front of a home crowd, got off to a fast start scoring in the 9th minute to take a 1-0 lead. However, in the 84th minute Junior Angelika Uremovich scored on a penalty kick to tie the score. The goal was her team leading ninth of the season, however, neither team could capitalize in the two overtime periods and the match ended in a tie. The team returns to action this Friday, Oct.5th in a home match against Villanova.
No.25 Field hockey hit the road this past weekend to take on two ranked opponents. Louisville matched up against top-ranked Syracuse Saturday. The Orange scored two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. After halftime, Syracuse netted another goal to secure a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals. It was the first time the Cardinals have been shut out this season. Next, the Cardinals were matched up against 23rd-ranked Albany on Sunday. After a scoreless first half, Albany would score three goals in the second half and hold Louisville to only one goal to win 3-1. The Cardinals record dropped to 7-5 but they look to bounce back this weekend as they play host to 5th-ranked Connecticut Saturday and 11th-ranked Iowa Sunday.
The cross country team hosted the Greater Louisville Classic this weekend at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer Park. The Cardinals placed sixth in the event.
