Wrist-gate 2012

By Justin Renck:

Well it has not been the best weekend if you are a UofL fan (which I assume you are if you are reading this). Of course I am talking about football and men’s basketball, not all of our sports (Volleyball hosting NCAA and Men’s Soccer victory were great of course).

On Friday night against Missouri in the Battle 4 Atlantis, Gorgui Dieng took a charge and injured his left wrist. He did not play on Saturday against Duke, and every time they showed him on the bench, it was heartbreaking. He looked miserable sitting out. Fans began to wonder if it was a sprain or a break, and now we know. His left wrist is broken. Dieng will see a hand specialist on Monday to get a better idea of how long he will be out, but most signs point to 4-6 weeks.

This will obviously give Stephan Van Treese and Zach Price a chance to step up, as they did very well against Duke on Saturday night. I was very impressed with both players. Hopefully this experience that they will both gain will help us in March. You never know!

Also on Saturday, our beloved QB Teddy Bridgewater suffered a broken left wrist. That’s right. Possibly the most important player for each team breaks his left wrist, just 1 day apart. You can’t make this stuff up.

In the 2nd half, Teddy could not even take snaps from under center. Every snap was in the shotgun, and he caught them with his right hand. He is expected to play this Thursday against Rutgers, but I will be very surprised if he can make it the whole game. I am not questioning his toughness one bit. I just think it will be very tough to play with that injury and NOT get hurt again. The pressure is definitely on the offensive line now!

Stay safe out there Cards fans. Protect those wrists, it’s a bad time for them!
