Volleyball drops first set, then dominates Rutgers

If there was a team at the University of Louisville that entered this season with a lot of hype, it was the volleyball team. But after a rough start (2-6), some fans may have forgotten just how talented this team is, not to mention how tough of an early season schedule they played. If you haven’t taken notice lately, the Cards are on fire. They have won 11 of their last 12 matches, with 6 of those being 3-0 sweeps! Playing in their 4th match of a 7-game road trip, the Cards dismantled Rutgers 23-25, 25-10, 25-17, 25-20.

Emily Juhl had 21 kills and hit .528 with 2 blocks. Maya McClendon added a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.

“We need to respond to adversity a little quicker. I felt like we were sleep walking through the first set and then woke up,” said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. “Maya was swinging very aggressively and helped us on defense with 13 digs. Our setters were very effective at the service line, allowing us to go on runs.”

Louisville had 2 service errors and dropped the first set. Over the next 3 sets, the Cards would use runs of 9-0, 5-0, and 9-0 again to bury the Scarlet Knights to take the match.

The Cards improved their record to 13-7 and are in first place in the American with an 8-0 conference record. Their next match is this Sunday at UConn. It begins at 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNU.
