Count me in as someone who thought that if Maverick Rowan were to reclassify to 2015, the Louisville Cardinals were a sure thing to land the 6’7 sharp shooter. When the news broke last night that Rowan was, in fact, enrolled in classes that would allow him to reclassify, I thought it was only a matter of time before Rowan joined the recruiting class for the Cards.
Not so fast my friend…
For whatever reason, it is looking like Maverick Rowan will not end up in the Derby City to play his college basketball. Depending on what side you are on, you can make your own argument. If you are a Louisville fan, you can say that Pitino and the Cards have backed off and are no longer pursuing Rowan. Or maybe Rowan just isn’t interested in Louisville anymore. You can spin in whatever way you want. You will probably hear both of those. It really doesn’t matter.
It is looking more and more like Rowan could end up at St. John’s, where his father played alongside Chris Mullin many moons ago. By the way, Mullin is now the head coach for St. John’s. Rowan visited St. John’s today, one day after the news of him reclassifying.
Rowan has made it known that he wants to play right away. If you look at it from that angle, it is pretty obvious that St. John’s offers more playing time than Louisville. The wing position will be filled by guys like Donovan Mitchell, Trey Lewis, Deng Adel, and Damion Lee. I can’t say I know what St. John’s has, but it probably isn’t that.
Some kids want to be “the man” and get all of the playing time. Some want to compete for National Championships every year. I am not one to judge what a kid wants. If he does choose St. John’s, I hope he scores 50 points a game and gets what he would go there for, and I mean that.
Adding Rowan would have been a solid addition to the team, but not getting him does not make us any worse whatsoever. I can’t wait to see this team play in August!
