Starting pitcher Luke Smith limited a red-hot Miami (OH) Redhawks team to just one run on six innings pitched, as #10 Louisville (19-6) got a 6-1 win over Miami (OH) (18-5).
It was a quiet first inning for both clubs, but the second inning brought some offense in. The Redhawks scored first on an RBI double from Mackay Williams, jumping to a 1-0 lead.
Louisville, however, got four runs in the bottom second. Drew Campbell’s RBI groundout brought home Alex Binelas to tie the game at 1-1. Justin Lavey brought in two runs in the inning; the first came on a short RBI single that brought home Pat Rumoro, then stole home to add a second for him in the inning. Logan Wyatt would cap off Louisville’s scoring in the inning, bringing in another run on a bases-loaded walk.
The Cardinals added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the first coming on an RBI single from Jake Snider. Snider scored again on a wild pitch, extending Louisville’s lead to 6-2.
Louisville’s win was highlighted by a quality start from Luke Smith. Smith, who entered the game at 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA, earned another victory after six solid innings. He allowed five hits and two walks, allowing the only run the Redhawks would score in the contest. Bryan Hoeing, Carter Lohman, and Glenn Albanese helped Smith hold the Redhawks scoreless after their initial run in the second inning.
At the plate, Trey Leonard led the charge with a 1-for-2 showing, also scoring two runs in the process. Louisville also got hits from Jake Snider (1-for-4), Alex Binelas (1-for-4), Pat Rumoro (1-for-3), and Justin Lavey (1-for-4). The Cardinals’ six runs were aided by four errors from the Redhawks, as well as seven walks allowed. Louisville had two errors of their own in the game.
Miami (OH) actually outhit Louisville 6-5, but could not capitalize with runners in scoring position. The Redhawks ended up leaving eight runners on base, which bucked a trend for a team that entered today’s game averaging 8.1 runs per game. Landon Stephens and Charlie Herrigan each went 2-for-4 on the day, both also scoring doubles.
Louisville will continue their week on Friday, hosting Wake Forest at 6 p.m. ET.
