TWICA: September 6th

Welcome back to your weekly roundup of everything Cardinal, This Week in Cardinals Athletics! I’m going to keep this brief, so let’s get right into it!

Men’s Soccer (2-1)

The Cards had 2 games at home last week, first up being against Evansville. The Cards were able to come away with the 2-1 victory for their first win in the 2021 season. Goals were scored by Sander Roed and Aboubacar Camara, both during the waning minutes of the game.

Game number 2 was a crosstown matchup against the Knights of Bellarmine. It was a defensive battle throughout, going to a scoreless tie through full time and the 1st overtime, until heralded freshman Dante Huckaby scored his first college goal a few minutes into double overtime, and the Cards won!

This Week: Tuesday, September 7th Vs #21 Kentucky (7:30 PM, ACC Network)

Friday, September 10th Vs #18 Wake Forest (7:30 PM, ACC Network Xtra)

Women’s Soccer (4-1)

First game of the week saw the Cards travel to Saint Louis. It was a low scoring game but the Cards were able to come out ahead with the 1-0 victory thanks to a goal by Morgan Bentley.

The second game saw the Cards return home to welcome in the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers handed the Cards their first loss on the 2021 campaign, with the Cards falling by a score of 0-1.

This Week: Friday September 10th Vs #24 Michigan (5 PM)

#5 Field Hockey (4-0)

The Cards won their first game last week in a neutral field matchup against the University of Pennsylvania. The Cards won 3-1 on the back of goals from Julie Kouijzer, Katie Schneider, and Embry Jane Imorde.

The Cards then faced the #13 ranked Tigers of Princeton on Princeton’s home field. It was an extremely even battle, but the Cards were able to pull out the 3-2 victory in overtime! Goals were scored by Kouijzer, Erica Cooper, and then the game winner by Mattie Tabor!

This Week: Friday, September 10th Vs Indiana (Stars and Stripes theme) (6 PM)

Sunday, September 12th Vs #10 Liberty (1 PM)

#12 Volleyball (6-0)

The Cards hosted the Cardinal Classic this past week, with games against the other 3 teams at the event. The first game for the Cards during the Classic saw them up against the Tigers of Missouri, and the Cards came away with the 3-0 sweep. They were led in kills by Amaya Tillman (10), Anna DeBeer (10), and Aiko Jones (8).

Their second game of the classic saw the Cards face South Dakota. The Cards once again came away with the 3-0 sweep. They were led by kills from Anna Stevenson (11), Claire Chaussee (8), and DeBeer (6).

Their 3rd and final game was against the Norse of Northern Kentucky, and the undefeated Cards (with their best start since 2005) once again swept the opposition 3-0. Again the Cards were led in kills by both Stevenson and Jones with 10 a piece, with Nena Mbonu contributing 9 kills as well. 3 Cards made the all-tournament team; Tori Dilfer, Amaya Tillman, and the MVP of the tournament, Anna Stevenson.

This Week: Friday, September 10th Vs #8 Purdue (Neutral Court in Cincinnati, OH) (3 PM)

Saturday, September 11th At Xavier (TBA)

Cross Country

The first race of the Cardinals season was at the Tennessee Dual Meet this past Friday. Freshman Ian Kibiwot won his first race of his collegiate career, running a 20:00.25 in the men’s 4 mile. Other notable men finishes were junior Shadrack Kipkosgei placing 4th at 20:22.68, grad student Ben Ewert placing 9th at 20:49.57, and then sophomore Issac Kiprop placing 10th at 21:06.47. The women’s 3 mile for the Cards were led by finishes from redshirt senior Purity Sanga (4th in 17:34.01), senior Ivine Chemutai (10th at 18:50.69), grad transfer Kassidy Dill (11th in 19:02.65), and freshman Mattie Kindelsperger (12th in 19:16.91).

This Week: IDLE. The Cards will return to action on October 2nd with the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic.

Men’s Golf

This Week: The Cardinals will have their first action of the season at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Friday, September 10th through Sunday, September 12th.

Football

THE CARDINALS ARE BACK. The 2021 football campaign begins today, but this is a bit of a bonus week as we will see the Cards in action twice. Make sure to stick to Cardinal Sports Zone for all coverage and related news!!

This Week: Monday, September 6th Vs Mississippi (Chick Fil A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Georgia) (8 PM, ESPN)

Saturday, September 11th Vs Eastern Kentucky (7 PM, ACC Network Xtra)
