TWICA: October 18th

Welcome back to the all-encompassing weekly review of Cardinal Athletics, TWICA! No time to waste, let’s jump right into it!

Men’s Golf

The Cards competed in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate this past week. The Cards managed to shoot a 29-under-par as a team, good enough for 2nd place for the event! The Cards were led by a 9-under-par (7th place) performance by Jiri Zuska, as well as 5-under-par performances by both Max Kennedy and Pierce Grieve for a tie for 15th place.

This Week: IDLE

Women’s Golf

The Cards traveled to Illinois to compete in the Illini Women’s Invitational at Medinah and came away with a tie for the tournament title, their first since the 2019 Cardinal Cup. They shot an 11-under on the final day to grab the tie with #20 Georgia. The Cards were led by 2 top 5 finishes, Kendall Griffin in 2nd (8-under-par) and Lauren Thibodeau in 3rd (6-under-par).

This Week: IDLE

Men’s Soccer (9-4)

The squad went 2-0 on the week. In their first game, they faced off against Eastern Illinois, and came away with the dominant 5-0 win. Goals were scored by Pedro Fonseca, Aboubacar Camara (2), and Macoumba Ba (2).

They next faced the Tarheels of North Carolina, and came away with another shutout victory, this time 2-0. The 2 goals were both scored by Camara, who now has 12 goals on the year.

This Week: Tuesday, October 19th Vs Oakland (7 PM, ACC Network Xtra)

Friday, October 22nd Vs NC State (7 PM, ACC Network Xtra)

Women’s Soccer (7-5-1)

The Cards had one game on the docket this past week, against the Eagles of Boston College. Unfortunately, the Cards dropped the game by a score of 1-2. The lone goal was scored by Julia Simon.

This Week: Thursday, October 21st At #2 Virginia (7 PM)

Sunday, October 24th At Clemson (1 PM)

Women’s Tennis

The Cards competed in the Martha Thorn Invitational hosted by West Virginia. On the first day, the Cards picked up 1 doubles win (Joy Callwood and Rhea Verma) and 3 singles wins (Verma, Tatiana Simova, and Dina Chaika). On day 2, the Cards picked up 2 singles victories courtesy of Chaika and Tyra Richardson. On the final day, the Cards could only notch 1 singles victory, coming by way of a win from Simova.

This Week: Regionals hosted by Middle Tennessee State (October 21-25)

Men’s Tennis

The Cards hosted the Louisville Invitational this past week. On day 1, the Cards picked up 2 doubles victories (Alex Wesbrooks/Josh Howard-Tripp, Kyle Tang/David Mizrahi), as well as 4 singles victories (Howard-Tripp, Mizrahi, Wesbrooks, Tang). On day 2, the Cards posted 4 overall singles wins, 1 a piece from Howard-Tripp and Wesbrooks, and 2 from Tang, who advanced to his Division’s finals on the final day of the Invitational. On that final day, Tang unfortunately fell in the finals, but Wesbrooks and Mizrahi won consolation matches.

This Week: IDLE

Cross Country

The Cards competed for the first time at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. The Men’s team finished in 8th place overall, getting great performances from Ian Kibiwot (5th, 23:41.0), Albert Kosgei (23rd, 24:09.02), and Issac Kiprop (45th, 24:35.7). The Women’s team finished in 13th place, led by an 11th place performance by Emma Bryant (20:54.9).

This Week: Saturday, October 23rd Vs Boston College (4 PM, ACC Network)

#4 Field Hockey (13-2)

In their first game of the week, the Cards traveled to take on the 12th-ranked Boston College Eagles. It was a tough battle, but Louisville prevailed 3-2 in overtime! The goals were scored by Aimee Plumb, Charlie van Oirschot, and the game-winner by Erica Cooper!

The Cards then traveled to take on Northeastern, and cruised to a 7-0 victory behind goals from Plumb (2), Cooper, Embry Jane Imorde (2), Katie Schneider, and Alli Bitting.

This Week: Friday, October 22nd At #10 North Carolina (4 PM)

Sunday, October 24th At James Madison (Noon)

#2 Volleyball (18-0)

The Cardinals continued their perfect season this past week with 2 wins. First off, they traveled to Virginia Tech and came away with yet another 3-0 sweep (25-20, 30-28, 25-22). They were led by 13 kills from Anna Stevenson and 8 kills a piece from both Claire Chaussee and Anna DeBeer, 3 aces from Aiko Jones, 3 blocks a piece from Stevenson and Amaya Tillman, 8 digs a piece from DeBeer and Elena Scott, and 36 assists from Tori Dilfer. This was also the 100th win in the career of head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, so congratulations go out to her!

The Cards then traveled to Wake Forest, where despite dropping their first set since the game against Kentucky, they still came away with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19). The Cards were led in this game by Chaussee’s 12 kills, Tillman’s 11 kills, Stevenson’s 10 kills, 3 aces from Ceci Rush’s 3 aces, 4 blocks a piece from Stevenson’s and Jones’s 4 blocks a piece, Chaussee’s 12 digs, and Dilfer’s 40 assists.

This Week: Friday, October 22nd Vs Virginia (7 PM)

Sunday, October 24th Vs #4 Pittsburgh (Noon)

Before I go, 2 special shout-outs to 2 Cardinal greats. First, to Lamar Jackson, for setting the record for most wins by a QB before turning 25, as well as officially getting his number 8 retired by the University (it will be officially retired at the November 13th game vs Syracuse)! Also, a shout-out to Dana Evans, who won a WNBA Championship in her rookie season for the Chicago Sky! We are so proud of you two and so grateful that you spent your college careers at UofL!
