No. 2 Louisville Wins Fourth Straight NCAA Baseball Regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lefthander Drew Harrington delivered a dominant performance on the mound while Nick Solak homered and drove in three runs as the No. 2 national seed Louisville baseball team won its fourth straight NCAA Regional championship with Sunday’s 3-1 victory against Wright State at Jim Patterson Stadium.

With the win, their 22nd consecutive at home, the Cardinals (50-12) clinched their sixth NCAA Super Regional berth and fourth 50-win season in the last 10 years. Louisville, which owns the nation’s longest active NCAA Regional winning streak at 12 games, will host the winner of the Nashville Regional in the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional starting either Friday or Saturday at Patterson Stadium. Having already set a school record for home wins in a season, the Cardinals improved to 36-1 at Patterson Stadium this season and are 22-6 all-time in NCAA postseason games at the corner of Third and Central.

Devin Hairston: Accepts Invite To Team USA Baseball

DURHAM, N.C. – Louisville sophomore shortstop Devin Hairston has earned and accepted an invitation to compete for a roster spot on the 2016 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Hairston is scheduled to participate in the team’s training camp starting June 27 in Southern California and will compete for one of the openings on the final 24-player roster. Hairston is the second member of the Cardinals to receive the call from Team USA this spring joining sophomore pitcher/first baseman Brendan McKay, who accepted a roster spot in March.

An All-ACC Third Team selection, Hairston started all 56 regular season games hitting for a .368 average with three home runs, 44 RBI, 13 doubles and 50 runs scored. The defensive whiz up the middle also leads the Cardinals with 27 multiple-hit games and enters the postseason on an 11-game hitting streak.

DURHAM, N.C. – The third-ranked Louisville baseball team enters the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship as the No. 2 seed and will begin its Pool B schedule against No. 10 Wake Forest (4-3 winner against No. 7 Duke on Tuesday) on Wednesday at 7 p.m., ET at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Following an off day, the Cardinals continue the week against No. 6 Clemson on Friday at 11 a.m., before concluding pool play against No. 3 Virginia on Saturday at 7 p.m. The two teams with the best records within their respective pools will advance to the title game on Sunday at noon with the winner earning the ACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.

Radio coverage for all Louisville baseball games at the ACC Championship and throughout the postseason will be provided by 93.9 The Ville. Regional Sports Networks from across the conference footprint and across the nation will carry all 14 games on Tuesday through Saturday. Sunday’s championship game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. All games will also be available on ESPN3.

Around the Bases, April 6th 2016

Last weekend was business as usual for Louisville, as the Cardinals swept the Hokies. With wins of 8-4 (Fri.), 13-0 (Sat.) and 9-3 (Sun.), the Cardinals have a six-game winning streak heading into another big weekend at Florida State. Florida State currently holds a two-game lead over Louisville in the ACC Atlantic Division, and a series win could be big in clinching back-to-back division titles for the Cardinals.

Welcome back to another edition of Around the Bases, where we cover Louisville Baseball from base to base, foul post to foul post.

After finishing off Wright State last Wednesday to reach a 10-game winning streak, the Cardinals dropped two of three in last weekend’s series at Miami (FL) with scores of 4-8 and 3-6 before winning 4-3 on Sunday to avoid a sweep. After dropping the series and falling to #8 in the Baseball America Top 25, they bounced back to win their first midweek road game against Purdue 9-4 on Wednesday.

Welcome to another weekly edition of Around the Bases, satisfying your hunger for more Louisville baseball. After a flawless 5-0 stretch this past week, the Cardinals have another five games at home to wrap up their 10-game home stand, including their first weekend conference series v. Notre Dame.

The Cardinals went a perfect 5-0 to extend their record to 10-2. The week began with a 9-5 victory over Morehead State, led by Blake Tiberi’s 3/3 performance at the plate with two RBI and a home-run by Colby Fitch in the fourth inning. Pitcher Kade McClure threw five scoreless innings and only allowed one hit in the performance.

Welcome to the newly titled Around the Bases, where I cover your weekly fix for Louisville baseball. After a disappointing setback at Ole Miss, the Cardinals will look to regain some momentum today v. Morehead State at 3:00 p.m., beginning a 10-game home stretch.

Pitching for the Cards

After starting the season 4-0 with a fiery performance versus SIU-Edwardsville and Eastern Kentucky, the Cards suffered their first setback last weekend at Ole Miss. The Cards lost the series in Oxford with a 6-5 loss on Friday, 4-0 win on Saturday and a 4-2 loss on Sunday. The Cardinals enter today’s game versus Morehead State with a #4/5 ranking and a 5-2 record, beginning a 10-game home stretch.

The University of Louisville baseball team just got a lot better for next season. Ace Kyle Funkhouser will NOT be signing with the LA Dodgers and he will return to UofL. It has been reported that the Dodgers did not have enough money to sign him. Whatever the reason is, we will take it!

So the Louisville Cardinals have certainly welcomed themselves into the ACC neighborhood in nearly every sport this season. Baseball has been no exception at all. After setting the record for most conference wins in an ACC season with 25, the Cards were rewarded on Monday afternoon when the regular season awards were announced.
