UofL Football Recap: Cards Lay The Law on The Governors

Good afternoon CardNation. Welcome to week 1 of the Louisville Football schedule. Coach Brohm starts year 2 at helm of his alma mater, as the Cards take on the Governors of Austin Peay. Coach Brohm went 10-4 in his first year, including losing the last 3 games to conclude the season.

Louisville will have a new quarterback under center, as Tyler Shough looks to pick up his 1st win as a Louisville Cardinal. On the defensive side of the ball, Louisville returns starters Ashton Gillette and Quincy Riley and welcome back defensive back MJ Griffin from injury.

1st Quarter:

Louisville received the ball first, and executed their first set of plays perfectly with gains of 21, 24 and 11 yards. The Cards settled for a 30-yard Brock Travelstead field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Louisville defense forced a quick 3 and out. On the Cards’ second possession, they continued to move the ball, but this time came away with a 9 yard  touchdown pass from Shough to Brooks, for their first touchdown as Cards. Louisville took a 10-0 lead going into the second quarter, after the defense racking up 2 more sacks.

2nd Quarter:

Keyjuan Brown, on the first play of the quarter, scored on a tough and physical 3-yard run. The touchdown gave Louisville a 17-0 lead. Louisville’s defense continued to play Stick em coverage on the back end and the defensive front continued to dominate. Louisville’s special team joined the party with a blocked punt. Louisville scored a touchdown on three consecutive drives, until they punted the ball with just one 1 minute remaining. TJ Capers got the first interception of the game and his career, which led to a 5 yard touchdown pass. Louisville took a 38-0 lead into the half.

3rd Quarter:

After a quick 3 & out by the Clarkson led offense, Isaac Brown scored on the first play of the next possession with a 77 yard scamper down the right sideline. A strip-sack by Logan and the 22 yard recovery and touchdown by Puryear gave the Cards a 52-0 lead. A 7-yard run by Watson, gave Louisville a commanding 59-0 lead.

4th Quarter:

In a 4th quarter that saw a lot of action, we saw catches by Louisville native Izayah Cummings, Cataurus Hicks and a familiar name in a different number, Ahmari Huggins-Bruce. A 38-yard field goal by Travelstead gave Louisville the 62-0 lead. Louisville defeats Austin Peay 62-0.

Post Game Notes:

Louisville improves to 1-0 on the young season. Louisville was led by their defense, a defense that accumulated 7 sacks, 1 interception, 1 force fumble and a touchdown. Tyler Shough threw for 4 touchdowns in his season debut. Louisville played a total of 7 quarterbacks today. Four running backs were able to tote the ball, and Isaac Brown led all rushers with 123 yards on 5 touches. Louisville stays at home next game with a 3:30PM kickoff.
