Cardinal football is officially in full swing beginning with the kickoff event: The Governor’s Cup Press Conference. This year the press conference was held at the Cardinal Club. Cardinal Sports Zone was present to hear both head football coaches discuss their improvement since last season and expectations for this season.
Charlie Strong’s 2013 recruiting class is shaping up to be one of the more talented we have ever had at the University of Louisville. One position that the Cardinals are not looking to load up on in this class is receiver. With that being said, it looks like Charlie Strong is looking to land 2 WR’s in the class of 2013. One of these scholarships is obviously being saved for the #3 WR in the country and Louisville (Trinity) native James Quick, but who will be the first to commit and take the other?
Athlon Sports released their Top 50 Big East players for the upcoming 2012 season. These rankings were based on 5 criteria: 2012 projected performance, importance to team, positional importance, NFL draft stock, and career performance.
The Cards had 7 players make the list. Here they are, along with their ranking.
This Saturday, former UofL great DeJuan Wheat will be hosting a shoot-out for kids ages 6-16. The event is free and open to the public, and will be held at St. Stephen Family Life Center on Kentucky St. For your kids to participate, they must be registered at www.dejuanwheatsports32.com or www.ssflc.org. Another option is to call (502) 583-6873 Ext 0. The first 100 kids to sign up will get to compete.
Each kid will get 35 seconds to make as many shots as possible from about 8-10 spots on the floor. Each spot will be numbered accordingly for what that shot is worth. After each round, kids with the highest scores advance to the next round. Trophies will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each age group. The age groups are 6-8, 9-12, and 13-16.
If you haven’t already heard, the University of Louisville has hired Nick Stover as the Director of Social Media and Engagement. He will be bringing the fans behind the scenes pictures, video, updates, and different promotions. We here at CSZ look forward to helping Stover in any way we can with some projects at UofL.
Make sure you are keeping up with Stover and the Flying Cardinal!
Here is the first edition of the Flying Cardinal on youtube. Enjoy!
Two UofL basketball recruits from the 2013 class will be playing on ESPN U tonight. Anthony Barber and Troy Williams, who play for Boo Williams, will be facing the Houston Defenders. The Defenders have the Harrison twins on their team, who are also big time prospects. The game will be at 7:00 pm.
It appears that 2012 UofL basketball commit Terry Rozier won’t make it to campus after all. At least not yet. Rozier, a 4* point guard from Shaker Heights, Ohio did not qualify academically and he will attend Hargrave Military Academy for the 2012-13 season. 2013 UofL commit Anton Gill will also be playing at Hargrave, which is located in Virginia.
CSZ’s Steve Rummage had this to say: “Rozier heading to Hargrave may be a blessing for UofL. Now if they (UofL) miss out on (Anthony) Barber and (Demetrius) Jackson, Rozier is sitting there for the 2013 class.”
Once again, Adam Lucas has created some more awesome UofL artwork, and we are posting some of those right here for you to check out. You can see the rest of his work on adamlucasdesign.com. We also post some of his work in our “UofL Designs” page, so check those out as well. Follow Adam on twitter @Adam_Lucas_
ESPN’s College Gameday will be making its first appearance at the KFC Yum! Center in the 2012-13 season! They will be in town when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish come to Louisville. The date has not been announced yet, but obviously it will be on a Saturday during conference play, so likely January or February.
2013 ATH Jalen Reeves-Maybin
You can truly find D-1 talent in any corner of the country these days. But in Clarksville, TN there’s a special kid who can just about do anything. He threw for 1468 yards (15 TD’s), rushed for 1468 (31 TD’s), and tallied 103 tackles and 10 FF (forced fumbles) on defense. It should be no surprise that the kid’s name is synonymous with hard work and do it all ability. His last name is Maybin. Jalen Reeves-Maybin is in the class of 2013 and is the son of Louisville legend Marques Maybin. The Jack-of-all trades Reeves-Maybin gave CSZ an exclusive interview with CSZ’s own Jeremy Wahman.
The summer can be a rough time for UofL basketball fans; there just isn’t anything going on. But the reality is the summer is where you build the foundation of your team for the years to come and Coach Rick Pitino and staff are showing just how important this time of recruiting really is. The staff has been very busy as of late: Who are they watching? Who is really interested in UofL? And is there a chance 2013 could be the best class Pitino has ever had at UofL? We will answer all these questions and more so let’s get started!
It is a very busy time in the world of basketball recruiting. If you try to keep up with it, you will hear so many different names and schools, it may be overwhelming. This is why we give you the list of who the Cards have as their top priorities, so you don’t have to keep up with everyone.
Listed below are the links to our updated 2013 and 2014 pages. We have listed the players, along with their rankings from Scout, Rivals, and ESPN. We also have videos for almost every player.
Keep in mind that on Monday evening, our recruiting expert, Steve, will release a more detailed blog to catch you up even more with the recruiting scene. He will tell you a little about the players, who he thinks the Cards have the best chances at getting, and who his personal favorites are. So that will be a good one to look out for! Until then, check these out!
52 Days. 30 Minutes.
As the newest member of the Cardinal Sports Zone’s “Dream Team,” I thought I’d introduce myself in my first blog. I’m a 22-year-old, diehard U of L fan and Senior at the best University, of course, the University of Louisville. Attending games of all sports is one of my favorite things to do. Any chance I get to cheer on my Cards, I’m there… Or at least Tweeting about it. My greatest childhood memories consist of attending U of L games with my parents. One of my favorite Louisville memories is the Louisville vs. Miami game in 2006. Miami came in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium and STOMPED on our beloved Cardinal Bird. Bad idea. The tension and passion I witnessed during that game… Incredible. Stomping the Bird gave the Cards the drive and motivation to blow out Miami. They may have taken out Brohm, but the Cards came out victorious, winning 31-7. Beating the Canes for the first time. The best part of that game was storming the field and kissing the Cardinal Bird Logo.
The passion of a Louisville fan is unmatched. Card Nation absolutely has the best fans. The atmosphere at games is probably the main reason I am ready for Cardinal Football to kick off! Season Opener, Battle for the Governor’s Cup. Each year the U of L vs. UK game proves to be a great game. This year, UK players are determined to beat Louisville. However, with Teddy, D. Brown, Mario, COACH STRONG (and, of course, the rest of the staff and team), the Governor’s Cup is staying in The Ville.
Coming off last season’s 7-6 record, shared Big East Championship and heartbreaking (I cried…), but motivating loss to N.C. State in the Belk Bowl, it’s safe to say the Cards are ready to dominate this year. I see big things in Cardinal Football’s future.
This season is going to be incredible. I couldn’t think of a better time to join the CSZ Fam!!
R U READY??
Here is an awesome video from that Louisville-Miami game in 2006, found on YouTube. Go Cards!
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I-A College Football. The Trophy committee has just released its watch list for the 2012 season, and UofL senior Mario Benavides has made the list. The winner will be honored on January 12, 2013 at a banquet in Lincoln, Nebraska. Here is the complete list of players that are on the watch list.
Off-season? What do you mean? When you follow an athletic program like the University of Louisville, there is ALWAYS something going on and news to talk about. Such is the case recently. We will try to get you caught up on all of that right here with our news & notes about different teams of the program, alumni doing big things, and just any other news worth sharing. Enjoy!
When you are a Quarterback at Trinity High School, that comes with a lot of expectations, and probably some high-caliber college offers by the time you get to be a senior. Reggie Bonnafon is only a junior, and will be a backup this season, but next year he will start, where every year the expectation is a state title. Even without beings the starter yet, he already has college offers. Reggie took some time to talk with us at CSZ about different things from following in the footsteps of other big name Trinity QBs, his college offers, and more…
CSZ’s Jeremy Wahman was able to get this exclusive interview with 2013 SF Troy Williams. Check out what he had to say!
Cards fans will have a couple of chances to see 2013 QB commit Kyle Bolin play this season, and they don’t even have to travel to Lexington.
