The 2015 NFL Draft begins Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. It has turned into a three-day extravaganza recently and Thursday will only bring you the first round of the draft. The Louisville Cardinals could see a record number of players drafted this year, but all of that will take place over the course of three days. Five-Star Small Forward Will Visit Louisville

Photo: ny2lasports.com

Photo: ny2lasports.com

This past weekend was a big one on the basketball recruiting front. Of course, the Cards don’t have many scholarships over the next couple of years, so you won’t hear too many names that they are going after. However, the weekend did produce the news that a 5-star small forward in the class of 2016 will be taking an official visit to Louisville.

Update on Maverick Rowan: Not Allowed to Comment on Louisville?

Photo: 247 Sports

It was a strange Friday night for Louisville target Maverick Rowan. The Cards have one spot left to fill for next season’s team. That spot looks to be reserved for Rowan, and if he can’t reclassify to 2015, the scholarship may just be saved and not used for this season.

Rowan was in Lexington on Friday playing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. Yes, Nike. Not only that, he played for the Each1Teach1 team, better known as E1T1. That is the same team that Antonio Blakeney played for. Remember Blakeney committed to Louisville and then about (what seemed like) 10 seconds later, he decommitted and ultimately ended up choosing LSU, a Nike school.

Defending the Ralph Willard Hire…For Some Reason

AP Photo/Tony Dejak

AP Photo/Tony Dejak

It became official on Thursday that Ralph Willard will be coming back to UofL to join Rick Pitino’s staff as an assistant coach. Willard was on staff at Louisville from 2009-2011 and has also coached with Rick Pitino with the New York Knicks (1987-89) and the University of Kentucky (1989-90). He has coached the game of basketball for 39 years. I don’t need to go into his records at all of his stops. The man has proven he knows the game of basketball.

What is interesting about this hire is some of the reaction it has gotten. I certainly didn’t think I would need to defend this hire, but here we go. Here are some quotes I saw about Willard while searching the interwebs.

Pitino: Lewis, Lee, Mitchell won’t have defined roles on offense

Photo: Tim Haag/CardinalSportsZone.com

Rick Pitino just wrapped up his press conference where he talked about new transfer Damion Lee, new assistant Ralph Willard, and the Cards’ trip to Puerto Rico this summer. He obviously said a lot of things worth mentioning, but one thing near the end seemed to stick out when talking about the offense.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville men’s basketball team will play as many as six games against national teams from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic during a week-long trip to Puerto Rico in August.

The Cardinals will face the Puerto Rico National Team, the Puerto Rico Junior National Team and the Dominican Republic National Team during their Aug. 10-17 visit to Puerto Rico.  Details on game dates will be available at a later date.

Damion Lee Will Transfer to Louisville

The Louisville Cardinals have filled another void for next season. Evan Daniels has reported that Drexel transfer Damion Lee has decided to finish his career at the University of Louisville, where he will have one year of eligibility remaining. After hearing from many schools, around 70 or 80 according to Lee, he narrowed his list down to five. Ultimately, Lee chose the Cards over Arizona, Maryland, Gonzaga, and Marquette.

Transcript: Bobby Petrino ACC Spring Football Teleconference

Photo: Tim Haag/CardinalSportsZone.com

Photo: Tim Haag/CardinalSportsZone.com

The ACC football coaches had a teleconference on Wednesday to talk about their teams and wrap up the spring season. Bobby Petrino updated the status of Will Gardner, talked about wide receivers who have stood out, and more.

For the transcript of all of the coaches, click here.

BOBBY PETRINO: Well, I thought we had a very good spring. It was nice to have the continuity on our staff and have all of our coaches back and see the improvements that we made because our players really understand how we’re going to work and go about our business and the tempo that we’re going to practice at. So I felt like we were able to make some real strides there. We’ve had some good quarterback competition going on, which is always a lot of fun and something that I thought they all handled well, and then I like what I see from our defense. We’re going to be strong on the defensive front. We’ll have some new guys in the secondary, but they’re talented, and we have a really good linebacking crew. Overall I thought we got done a lot in spring ball, but certainly we have a lot of work ahead of us and a long way to go to get ready for a real tough early schedule.

Basketball Recruiting Update: Thornton Chooses Duke

Photo: cbssports.com

Photo: cbssports.com

This happened yesterday, so it is pretty well-known already, but I figured with the way our basketball recruiting page is now set up to post all of our recruiting posts, it would be a good idea to at least update you on this story.

Five-star point guard Derryck Thornton has committed to Duke and he will reclassify to 2015. He had planned to visit Louisville April 19-21, but plans changed and Coach K visited Thornton on April 20. Thornton originally pushed his visit to Louisville back to sometime in May, but we really didn’t expect that visit to happen.

Baseball Defeats Cincinnati; Softball Defeats Kentucky

Baseball

It is always a good thing when any team from the University of Louisville beats the Kentucky Wildcats or Cincinnati Bearcats. On Tuesday, both happened as the 3rd ranked baseball team beat Cincinnati 6-2 and the softball team beat 17th ranked Kentucky 8-0. Both games were on the road.

In Cincinnati, freshman pitcher Sean Leland picked up the win for the Cards as he pitched 5.2 innings and gave up just one run and five hits. He is now 3-0 on the season. Once Leland was done, Robert Strader and Kade McClure combined for 3.1 innings without giving up a run to close out the Bearcats.

Update on Maverick Rowan 4/21/15

Photo: Rivals.com

Photo: Rivals.com

Chip Miller of 247 Sports has provided an update on 2016 player Maverick Rowan, who is trying to reclassify to 2015. If he is able to reclassify, and really even if he is not able to, the Louisville Cardinals appear to be a front-runner to land the 6’7 small forward from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

We knew that Rowan needed two more classes to graduate early and enroll in college for the 2015-16 season. It sounds like his current high school, Cardinal Gibbons, is not helping him out very much to get this done.
