Welcome back for another edition of This Week In Cardinal Athletics for the week of November 25th – December 1st.
#3 Volleyball (25-5, 17-3):
The Cardinals had a rough week against #1 Pittsburgh & #5 Stanford. The Cardinals dropped both matches 3-1. Anna DeBeer led the Cardinals with 14 Kills & 9 Digs in the loss to Pittsburgh. Senior Charitie Luper contributed with 15 kills and 9 digits in the loss to Stanford.
Up Next: The Cardinals found out their NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday Evening. They secured the final #1 Seed. Their regional will begin on Friday hosting Chicago St.
#25/#22 Women’s Basketball (5-2):
The Cardinals had a big match-up against Colorado University. Jayda Curry & Nyla Harris helped sparked a 16-0 run in the 4th quarter to give the Cardinals the victory over the Buffaloes 79-71. Jayda & Nyla both had 14 points each. Tajianna Robers chipped in 14 points and Izela Arenas had season high of 11 points.
Up Next: The Cardinals host Oklahoma on Wednesday at 5pm & then travel to NYC to face UConn on Saturday at 9:30pm.
Men’s Basketball (5-2):
The Cardinals had a busy week with their travel to the Bahamas. Coach Kelsey & the Cardinals had up and down week with first defeating #14 Indiana 89-61. Chucky Hepburn & Noah Waterman both contributed with 16 pts a piece. Then, the faced West Virginia after their upset victory over #3 Gonzaga. The Cardinals & Chucky Hepburn continued their hot streak with defeating West Virginia 79-70. Chucky led the Cards with 32 points to the Championship against undefeated Oklahoma. Unfortunately, down the stretch, the Cardinals just couldn’t find their way to victory and fell 69-64.
Up Next: The Cardinals host Ole Miss on Tuesday at 9pm & Duke Sunday at 6pm.
Football (8-4):
The Cardinals went into Lexington and returned victorious with a 41-14 victory. Freshmen Running Backs Isaac Brown & Duke Watson combined for 34 rushes & 288 yards and 4 TD’s. The Cardinals defense also came to play with 3 Interceptions & 2 Fumble recoveries. This was first Governor’s Cup victory for the Cardinals since 2017.
