Around the Bases (2026): Week Five

It’s a five-game stretch for Louisville (10-5) this week, as the Cardinals host a midweek doubleheader versus Marshall on Tuesday and Wednesday. ACC play starts two days after for Louisville, as they take on Notre Dame, who is fresh off a road series win at Duke.

Last Week in Cliff Notes

Louisville took a stumble last Tuesday, falling 13-5 to Morehead State in their intrastate showdown. The Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead after Jimmy Nugent hit a RBI double in the second inning, but Morehead State tied it in the fourth inning with a two-run homer from Jaden Correa. The Eagles added six more runs in the fifth inning, book-ended by another home run from Correa. Correa led the Eagles with a 4-for-4 afternoon, with two home runs and five RBIs. After four more runs in the eighth inning, Morehead State cruised to their first win over Louisville since 2021.

After dropping the midweek game to Morehead State, Louisville rebounded with back-to-back run-rule victories over Seton Hall on Friday and Saturday. Both games saw the Cardinals jump on the Pirates early, with Louisville taking a 14-1 lead after three innings of game one before cruising to a 16-1 victory in seven innings. In game two, Louisville jumped to an 8-1 lead after two innings. After Seton Hall added a run in the third and fourth innings, Louisville answered with three of their own in the fifth, then two more in the eighth to walk it off in eight innings to a 13-3 victory.

Game three saw Louisville complete the sweep with a 6-2 victory over Seton Hall, featuring home runs from Tague Davis, Bayram Hot, and Jimmy Nugent.

Notable Numbers

Once again, Tague Davis leads off our spotlight for Louisville players from last week. He hit a home run in all three games of the Seton Hall series, bringing his season total to eight (first in ACC). He also had ten RBI in the series, and now has 28 through four weeks, to go with a .377 batting average and .885 slugging percentage in 15 games played.

Griffin Crain is still averaging over .400 at the plate, holding a .419 batting average with four doubles and 19 RBIs. He also hit the first home run of his collegiate career in Friday’s 16-1 win over Seton Hall. Jimmy Nugent and Jax Hisle also hit their first home runs of the season against Seton Hall, coming in Sunday’s 6-2 win over the Pirates. Nugent had a 6-for-12 run at the plate last week with three RBIs, and is averaging .348 for the season with nine RBIs. Alex Alicea had an active week at the plate, going 7-for-18 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Louisville had a rough outing versus Morehead State, one that saw the Cardinals give up 13 runs on 11 hits (fifth time this season their opponent has scored eight or more runs).

Against Seton Hall, Louisville had a pair of run-rule victories on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Ethan Eberle advanced his record to 2-0, allowing one earned run and throwing seven strikeouts in five innings. Tanner Thomas and Anthony Karbowski both had shutout appearances in their 2026 debuts. Saturday saw Wyatt Danilowicz earn another win (5.0 IP, three ERs, eight Ks), with Casen Murphy (2.0 IP, five Ks) and Kian Vorster (1.0 IP, two Ks) also getting shutout appearances.

Jake Bean had a quality start on Sunday after a rough three-week stretch to start the season. Bean pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run with five strikeouts.

Opponent Primer: Marshall

The Thundering Herd will make the roughly three hour, 198-mile drive from Huntington, W.Va. to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Cardinals. Marshall (9-5) is currently riding a five-game win streak heading into the midweek series with Louisville, fresh off a weekend sweep of St. Bonaventure (including a 25-2 win over the Bonnies on Sunday) and a midweek win at Virginia Tech.

Akron transfer Evan Bottone is coming off a 6-for-13 stretch last week versus Virginia Tech and St. Bonaventure; he currently leads the team in batting (.417) and home runs (four). Tyler Kamerer returns after starting all 59 games last year for the Thundering Herd, he’s had a dramatic improvement with a .386 batting average through four weeks (up from .271 last season) with nine doubles and 12 RBIs. Cooper Hinson had a 5-for-11 outing last week with three doubles and seven RBIs, and currently bats .300 on the season with a team-high 17 RBIs.

Alex Caudill (10.29 ERA, 2.43 WHIP) has two starts against Winthrop and Virginia Tech, and it’s likely he’ll start at least one of the two games against Louisville. Davis Gunn (1.93 ERA in four appearances), Charlie Krebs (2.70 ERA, two saves in five appearances), and Landon Doll (1-1, 1.64 ERA) headline a bullpen that is part of a Marshall pitching lineup with a 4.75 ERA.

Opponent Primer: Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish will have a midweek game versus Queens before traveling south to face Louisville, but Notre Dame has already started 2026 on the right track. They already have series wins over FAU and Duke, as well as a non-conference win over Indiana (9-8 in 11 innings) and had a stretch of four straight run-rule victories.

Part of Notre Dame’s success has been from their starting rotation, with Ty Uber (3-0, 0.96 ERA) and Jack Radel (2-1, 1.57 ERA) both holding sub-2.00 ERAs. Both also are holding opponents to under .150 batting each, with Radel also tallying 33 strikeouts in four starts. Eli Thurmond (zero ERA in six appearances), Olsin Lee (1-0, 3.37 ERA in four appearances), and Dylan Singleton (3.38 ERA in four appearances) have been solid in the bullpen, as Notre Dame holds a 3.20 ERA heading into this week (third-best in the ACC).

Notre Dame has also been holding their own offensively, batting .310 at the plate (ninth-best in the ACC). Mark Quatrani is batting .469 through 13 games played (fourth-best in the ACC) with a team-high five home runs and 19 RBIs. Noah Coy (.390 batting) has 12 RBIs and has 13 walks to just three strikeouts so far, with Bino Watters (.295 batting, four doubles, four HRs, 15 RBIs) earning Freshman All-American and All-ACC Freshman Team honors last year.
