Louisville MBB Recap: Cards Can’t Weather The Storm

The Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball battled deep into the final seconds but ultimately fell 78–73 to the Miami Hurricanes in a tightly contested matchup. It came down to execution in the closing moments where Miami executed perfectly and the Cards just weren’t sharp enough.

Louisville shot an efficient 48-percent from the field and controlled stretches of the game early, even building a seven-point lead midway through the first half after a 10–0 run. However, Miami slowly chipped away and seized momentum in the second half behind physical play inside and consistent trips to the free throw line. The Hurricanes converted 19-of-29 from the stripe compared to Louisville’s 13-of-17, a margin that proved critical in a five-point final.

Ryan Conwell led Louisville with 22 points and nine rebounds, though the junior guard struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 1-of-10 attempts. J’Vonne Hadley added an efficient 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting while also pulling down six rebounds and dishing three assists. Despite those efforts, Louisville never fully recovered after Miami built a nine-point advantage midway through the second half.

Miami leaned heavily on Malik Reneau, who powered the Hurricanes with 24 points and six rebounds while repeatedly drawing contact inside. Tre Donaldson orchestrated the offense with six assists, and Ernest Udeh Jr. controlled the glass with nine rebounds. In the final seconds, a block by Sam Henderson on a Conwell three-point attempt sealed the outcome before Henderson punctuated the game with a dunk at the buzzer.

Louisville managed a final layup from Sananda Fru as time expired, but it only trimmed the deficit to five. The Cardinals held a 36–33 rebounding edge and matched Miami’s 27 made field goals, yet the Hurricanes’ advantage at the free throw line and Louisville’s 25-percent shooting from deep ultimately swung the result.

The Cards now await Selection Sunday to see where they’ll be seeded, where they’ll be playing, and who their opponent will be.
