Louisville MBB Recap: Cards Fall To The Spartans

Louisville’s season came to a halt Saturday inside KeyBank Center, as Michigan State methodically pulled away for a 77-69 win in front of 17,499 fans. The Cardinals (24-11) showed early fight, but never quite seized control, trailing 36-31 at the break after Michigan State knocked down seven first half threes at a 50-percent clip. Every time Louisville threatened, the Spartans 27-7 answered with timely shot making and steady execution, maintaining a cushion that hovered between two and three possessions most of the night.

Louisville leaned heavily on the perimeter, finishing 13-for-37 from beyond the arc, and got strong individual efforts from Ryan Conwell and Adrian Wooley. Conwell led the way with 21 points, connecting on five triples, while Wooley added 17 on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting. Isaac McKneely chipped in 9 points, all from deep, as the Cardinals showed improved rhythm in the second half, shooting 46.7-percent from the field and nearly 47-percent from three after the break.

However, the difference came in balance and physicality. Michigan State placed four players in double figures, led by Coen Carr’s 21 point, 10 rebound performance. Trey Fort provided a key spark off the bench with 12 points on a perfect 3-for-3 night from beyond the arc, while Jeremy Fears Jr. added 12 despite struggling from the field, but controlled the game dishing out 16 assists. The Spartans also capitalized at the free throw line, going 14-for-19 compared to Louisville’s six attempts.

Rebounding and second chance opportunities quietly tilted the game as well. Michigan State held a 39-32 edge on the glass and turned that into 14 second chance points, helping offset Louisville’s advantage in points off turnovers 20-7. The Cardinals generated pressure and forced mistakes but couldn’t consistently convert in the half court, particularly inside, where they managed just 26 points in the paint.

Louisville made one final push midway through the second half, cutting the deficit to a single possession, but a quick response from the Spartans highlighted by a Carr finish and a Fort three restored control. From there, Michigan State closed the door at the line, keeping Louisville at arm’s length in the final minutes.

For Louisville, the loss marks a frustrating end to a season that showed flashes of high level scoring and resilience, but ultimately fell short against a deeper, more complete Michigan State squad.
