For the first time in school history, the Louisville Cardinals baseball team is the number one team in the polls. The Baseball America polls were released this morning, and the Cards jumped Oregon State, Florida, Florida State and preseason number one TCU to take the top spot. The National College Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game College Baseball and the USA Today Coaches Poll also have the Cards atop the college baseball polls. This past week, they went 4-0 as they defeated Fort Wayne and swept ACC foe Pittsburgh. They stand at 15-0 on the season and are the only remaining undefeated team in baseball. They play Xavier this Wednesday at noon, where they look to chase down the school record to best start to the season (17-0 in 1957).
Of the six major polls, only Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and D1baseball.com prevented the Cards from earning a consensus #1 ranking. CBN had the Cards at #2, one point behind top-rank Oregon State (14-1). D1baseball has the Cards rising one spot to #4 behind Florida State, Oregon State and TCU.
