UofL Commits DT Dejmi Dumervil Jean, OT Tyler Steen, and S Trenell Troutman, along with top target OLB Nik Bonnito, fell short in their quest to win their fourth consecutive FL Class 7A state title. Their team, the St Thomas Aquinas Raiders fell to the Venice Indians 27-20 in the state semifinal.

Below I recap how each player faired in the game.

Tyler Steen had an excellent game. He had a couple of run plays where he viciously blocked his man. He pancaked one Venice defender. He did even better in pass protection. He never got beat and was so smooth protecting his QB’s blind side. He swallowed pass rushers whole.

Trenell Troutman nearly had an interception. Unfortunately, it was negated by a pass interference penalty. He was great helping out against the run, contributing 4 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles. Troutman will be an excellent defender in the back-end for UofL.

Dejmi Dumervil Jean is so massive. He was literally the biggest guy on the field, unlike his Uncle Elvis. Venice constantly double and sometimes triple teamed him with blocks. Yet, he was still able to effect the game. Many of Venice’s runs were to the gaps opposite him or to the outside away from him. He was getting quite a bit of penetration into the backfield. Dumervil Jean finished with 3 solo tackles and 4 assisted. With one of his tackles, he made a Venice player literally disappear. I wouldn’t doubt he will play some snaps next year.

UofL Target Nik Bonnito is going to be a good one for whoever lands him. He’s always active and was around the ball a lot. Even when he doesn’t make a tackle, he’s right there forcing a runner into a teammate’s grasp. He lined up quite a few times in coverage on a slot receiver. He is a guy who can do multiple things and that is something Bobby Petrino seems to value in his defensive personnel. Bonnito finished with 4 solo tackles and 4 assisted tackles.

Cardinal Sports Zone would like to congratulate our commits and recruit on a great season.
