Cards In The Pros: Memorial Day Update

Baseball and Memorial Day go hand in hand, just like hot dogs and apple pie and fireworks.  This is one of the best baseball weekends there are during the season. College baseball tournament championships are in full force, and on Memorial Day the field of 64 is set.

Congrats to the Cardinals on their 2 seed in the Lubbock regional. In the Big Leagues, each team is equipped with special uniforms and many guys are wearing custom cleats supporting the troops.  Adam Engel has had a great week with multiple hits for the White Sox, including his first long ball of the season. Former Dodgers first-round pick, Kyle Funkhouser has been sharp the last 3 weeks and looks like former All American and Collegiate National Team self.

Weekly statistics are from the week of 5/22-5/27/2018

Major Leagues

Adam Duvall recorded 1 hit this week, a single.  Through Memorial Day, Duvall is hitting .174/.268/.383 with 9 doubles, 9 home runs and 28 RBI’s.

Adam Engel had a great week of 7 hits in 5 days, including 4 hits and his first home run of the season on the 23rd.  Engel has appeared to have turned a corner this season and has seen his average jump over the .200 mark and his slashing .213/.279/.276 with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 9 RBI’s and 8 stolen bases.

Chad Green pitched one time this week for the Bronx Bombers throwing 1 inning and giving up 0 runs.  He did not record a strikeout this week but continues to throw well this season and has totaled 34 strikeouts in 26 innings, with an ERA of 2.42 and a WHIP of 1.00.

Matt Koch started once this week and went into the 6th inning against the Brewers giving up 1 earned run while striking out 5.  So far this season, Koch has posted a record of 3-3 in 8 starts, 25 strikeouts in 48 innings, an ERA of 4.31 and a WHIP of 1.27.

Nick Burdi: The Pirates have placed Nick on the 60-day Disabled List to start the season

AAA

Kyle McGrath was Designated for Assignment on May 27th.

Josh Rogers was at it again going into the 7th inning in his most recent start, striking out 6 and only allowing 1 earned run.  In 9 starts this year, Rogers has a 4-3 record with 51 strikeouts in 54.2 innings, an ERA of 2.80 and a WHIP of 1.15.

Cole Sturgeon has cooled down just a bit but is still playing well after collecting 3 more hits this week that included his first triple at AAA.  At this point in the year, Sturgeon is batting .325/.386/.512 with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, 22 RBI’s and 6 stolen bases between AAA and AA.

Dean Kiekhefer did not allow an earned run this week in 3 appearances for the Nashville Sound.  He pitched 3.2 innings, struck out 5 and gave up 3 hits. At this point this year between multiple teams, Kiekhefer has 3 saves, 23 strikeouts in 19 innings, an ERA of 1.42 and a WHIP of 1.11.

Chris Dominguez was placed on the 7-day Disabled list on April 23rd.

Zack Burdi is starting this season on the Disabled List as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery.

AA

Jeff Arnold recorded 3 hits in 3 games this week that included a double.  Between multiple levels this year the defensive specialist at catcher is hitting .176/.255/.259 with 4 doubles, 1 home run and 8 RBI’s.

Derek Self picked up 1 save in 2 opportunities this week in 1.2 innings of work.  He did not strike out anyone and gave up 2 earned runs in his second save opportunity.  At this time in the season, Self has an ERA of 4.58 and a WHIP of 1.13 in 17.2 innings with 16 strikeouts.

Kyle Funkhouser pitched well again his lone start this week and has continued to bring that ERA down.  While he did not factor in the decision he did go 6 strong innings with 6 strikeouts and only 1 walk, 1 earned run and 4 hits.  In the last 3 weeks, Funk has looked like his 1st round self again and hopefully, he can put together another solid month of June.  After 9 starts, Funkhouser is 0-3 with 42 strikeouts in 46 innings, an ERA of 4.11 and a WHIP of 1.52.

Nick Solak added 3 more hits in 4 games to his total of 52 this year.  He did add another double and 3 RBI’s this week as well. After 46 games, Solak is hitting .308/.420/.491 with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 30 RBI’s and 6 stolen bases.  I’m wondering if the Rays are looking to move him up to AAA soon or want him to get more reps before moving him up.

Corey Ray added 4 hits in 5 games this week, including 2 more doubles and 4 walks.  Ray has been constantly showing off his speed this year and he added 3 more stolen bases to his total of 12 this year.  After a bit of a slower start, Ray has been on fire of late averaging .256/.345/.477 with 15 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs and 20 RBI’s.

Grant Kay was placed on the 7 day DL at the start of the season.

Dace Kime, with the Akron Rubberducks of the Eastern League, is currently on the 7-day Disabled List.

Will Smith was placed on the 7 day DL on May 8th.

Jared Ruxer was released on 5/23 by the Kansas City Royals

Joe Filomeno was released on 4/23 by the Texas Rangers.

A Advanced

Drew Ellis recorded 3 hits in 4 games with 1 double.  The 2nd round pick last year has held his own at A Advanced for his first full season in professional baseball and is batting .258/.348/.465 with 14 doubles, 6 home runs, and 31 RBI’s.  He still doesn’t have a stolen base yet but I’m sure that will come soon.

Brendan McKay dominated again on the mound; I’m getting redundant here.  In his second start with the Stone Crabs, McKay went 6 innings giving up 3 hits, 0 earned runs and struck out 5, while not walking a batter.  At this point on the mound, he has 50 strikeouts in 35.2 innings to only 2 walks and a 4-0 record with an ERA of 0.76 and an unreal WHIP of 0.39.  At the plate this week, McKay had 3 hits in 3 games with 1 double and 2 RBI’s. Between two levels last years Golden Spikes Award Winner is slashing .241/.426/.310 with 3 doubles, 1 home run, 18 RBI’s, 28 walks in 27 games.

Jeff Thompson pitched once this week, striking out 1 in .2 inning, but he did walk 3 and gave up 3 earned runs. Between 2 levels this year, Big Jeff has 18 strikeouts in 18.2 innings with an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP of 2.36.

A

Blake Tiberi had 4 hits in 4 games this week with 1 double and 2 RBI’s.  With the Fireflies this year, Tiberi is slashing .271/.388/.348 with 9 doubles, 1 home run, and 15 RBI’s.

Drew Harrington was touched up in 2.2 innings in this weeks start giving up 5 earned runs and striking out 5.  In 10 games this year, 4 of which are starts, Harrington is 2-2 with a 5.97 ERA and a WHIP of 1.64 with 18 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

Lincoln Henzman had a bit of a rough start this week giving up 4 earned runs in 5 innings while striking out 3.  According to the MLB Pipeline, Henzman is ranked 26 in the top 30 prospects in the White Sox organization, one of the MLB’s deepest ranked organizations.  Through 9 starts this year he is 3-3 with 39 strikeouts in 48.2 innings, an ERA of 2.96 and a WHIP of 1.13. If he continues this pace, look for Henzman to move up to Winston Salem.

Colby Fitch hit safely in 5 of 6 games this week including 2 multi-hit games.  This is the most consistent action that Fitch has seen all season and he produced when given the opportunity.  In 24 games this year he is hitting .262/.357/.440 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, and 14 RBI’s.

Devin Hairston had 3 hits, including a double in 6 games this week.  In 28 games this year, he is slashing .247/.381/.290 with 2 doubles, 1 triple and 10 RBI’s.

Kade McClure was placed on the 7 day DL on May 14th.
