Varner, a 3 Star 6’4 240 lbs DE, plays for Hiram High School. He picked Louisville over Tennessee, Iowa State, Western Kentucky, among other schools.
In viewing Varner’s highlights, I found he is a powerful DE with a high motor, some speed, and excellent play recognition skills.
He prefers power moves to finesse moves when rushing the passer. It’s easy to see why as one of his opponents tried double teaming him, but could not get him to the ground nor stop him from making the play. He did use a nice inside swim move to make a play in one highlight.
Varner never gives up on plays. Many of his highlights are him coming from behind to make a tackle. It’s actually amazing to see his speed as he actually chased down a RB from behind 10-20 yards down field.
One other trait he possesses is play recognition and being able to identify who has the football quickly to make the stop. It’s almost uncanny the way that, despite a lot of traffic in his front or misdirection being used, he identifies the ball carrier and tackles him.
Varner is just the 4th Commitment of the 2019 recruiting class for Coach Petrino and staff. He’s a good one with a lot of unrealized and realized potential; not to mention he plays a position of need. It’s obvious Coach Petrino understands quality depth wins titles and he’s definitely working to build that.
