UofL Athletics and Muhammad Ali are linked closely together. Ali could be found at basketball games, at baseball games to watch his son Assad when he played for the Cards, and at football games.

Ali was the man who represented UofL for the coin flip at the 2007 Orange Bowl, the first BCS bowl game UofL was ever in. He was conspicuous in his UofL gear during pregame ceremonies for the 2013 Sugar Bowl. UofL honored him during its game against Florida State in 2016 with a beautiful helmet decal and some awesome in-game video clips on the video board. Now, as they did with the men’s and women’s basketball teams last year, UofL will honor The Greatest with a uniform inspired by him.

Uniswag was the first to report the news of the Ali football unis Louisville will sport sometime this fall. They are very similar to the uniforms the men’s and women’s basketball teams wore last season.

The jersey is solid white with what appears to be a black stripe or black piping at the end of both jersey sleeves. The numbers are black with a black outline and “Louisville” is printed in a font and style similar to what was on the robes Ali wore during his career. The back has the name plate in a different font, more of a block font.

Though we don’t get a clear and complete image of the pants, they appear to be white with black trim; the trim appears to be a black stripe down the leg and a black cummerbund around the waist, mimicing Ali’s boxing trunks. I know UofL fans have a distaste for cummerbunds due to our former basketball uniforms, but this is pretty slick.

The helmet will be solid white with a black facemask. The Cardinal head is outlined in black, solid white in color.

The Adidas cleats are white with black laces and black trim. The socks are solid white.

Red gloves complete the uniform ensemble. But wait? Red gloves? How does that fit in with this black and white color scheme? Uniswag says the choice of this glove color is to mimic boxing gloves. Here is there full quote regarding the gloves below:

“TO FINISH OFF THE LOOK EACH PLAYER WILL WEAR RED GLOVES GIVING THE ALLUSION OF THE PLAYERS WEARING BOXING GLOVES.”

That is a really cool and nice touch.

There has been no official announcement from UofL Athletics in regards to the uniforms or in regards to when Cardinal fans might see them being worn on the field by the team. As more details emerge about this awesome uniform, CSZ will give you the information.
