This week was a busy week in Louisville Cardinals Athletics. Here is the weekly recap in Cardinal Athletics.

#5 Men’s Golf:

On Tuesday, the #5 Cardinals competed in the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream, Ohio. The Cardinals took the tournament title finishing 26 shots better than the defending SEC Champion Arkansas. Senior John Murphy took the individual tournament title with a score of 17 shots under par. The Cardinals as a team, finished with a score of 37 shots under par. Matthias Schmid finished in second with a score of 14 shots under par.

Up Next: The Bank of Tennessee Classic starts Friday.

#24 Men’s Soccer:

On Tuesday evening, the Belmont Bruins came to Lynn Stadium looking to shock the #24 Cardinals but, the Cardinals had other plans. The Cardinals shut out the Bruins with a 3-0 victory. This shut out victory was the 5th shut out for Cardinals on the season. The Cardinals out shot the Bruins 12-0 in the second half after getting out shot 11-2 in the first half. Kino Ryosuke led the Cardinals in scoring by connecting on two goals. This win moved the Cardinals to 5-2-2 on the season.

Then on Friday, the #24 Cardinals took to the road to face #1 Virginia. The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 1-0 on the Cardinals and never looked back. The Cardinals only solid opportunity came in the 70th minute when Kino Ryosuke tried connecting on a header but just barely missed. The Cardinals also played this entire match down a player after Sophomore William Portman picked up his second yellow card which resulted in a red card. The Cardinals dropped to 1-2-1 in ACC play after this defeat. 

Up Next: The Cardinals face Clemson in Clemson, South Carolina.

#16 Women’s Soccer:

On Thursday night, the #16 Cardinals hosted the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Wake Forrest jumped out to an early start with a goal by Madison Hammond’s corner kick. The Cardinals were down going into halftime. The Cardinals came out strong with redshirt freshman Ravin Alexander getting a goal within three minutes into the second half. Then, the Cardinals’ junior Emina Ekic connected on another goal in 68th minute. This win moved the Cardinals to 10-1 on the season and 3-1 in the ACC.

Up Next: The Cardinals host #8 Clemson on Thursday at 5pm at Lynn Stadium.

Men’s Tennis:

The Cardinals men’s tennis team competed in the Purdue Invitational on Friday through Sunday. Friday, the Cardinals went undefeated as a team with sophomore Sergio Hernandez and junior Tin Chen whom picked up multiple wins. Saturday, the Cardinals continued their dominance against the competition. They had three reach the finals of their classes. On Sunday, three Cardinals competed in the finals. Sergio Hernandez and Tin Chen picked up single’s titles for their classes. While Matthew Fung finished runner up. The Cardinals also had two runner up finishes in double’s titles.

Up Next: The Cardinals host the Louisville Invitational starting Friday.

Swimming and Diving Team (Both Men’s and Women’s):

On Friday, the Cardinals faced the Xavier Musketeers in the season opener. The Cardinals’ women’s team won every single event in the match. The men’s team finished by winning 14 of the 16 events. The women Cardinals posted a score of 192 to Xavier’s women’s score of 62. While The Louisville Cardinals men’s team posted a score of 177 to Xavier’s men’s team score of 81. This gave the Cardinals their three straight home opener win.

Up Next:  The Cardinals travel to Dallas to compete against SMU on Friday through Saturday.

#6 Field Hockey:

On Friday, the #6 Cardinals took on #20 Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Cardinals defense came ready to play. Their defense held the Demon Deacons to 0 shots on goal. Junior Madison Walsh scored two of the three Cardinals’ goals. This win was the Cardinals third straight victory and the Cardinals fourth shutout of the season. The Cardinals moved to 9-1 on the season and 2-1 in the ACC.

On Sunday, the #6 Cardinals face Penn State in the second game of six game home stretch. The Cardinals came out scoring early with goals from Mercedes Pastor and Erica Cooper. Penn State’s offense couldn’t get anything past the Cardinal’s defense. The Cardinals defense helped pitched 3-0 Shutout of Penn State. This win moved the Cardinals to 10-1 on the season.

Up Next: The Cardinals host #8 Virginia Friday at 6pm

#25 Volleyball:

On Friday, the #25 Cardinals hosted the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. The Cardinals won in three sets (25-20, 25-15, and 27-25). The Yellow Jackets couldn’t stop the Cardinals’ Freshman Aiko Jones who had 13 kills and other freshman Nena Mbonu who had 8 kills of her own. The Cardinals defense limited the Yellow Jackets to many opportunities to score in critical situations.

On Sunday, the #25 Cardinals hosted the Clemson Tigers. The Cardinals came out strong taking the first set 25-18. Clemson answered back with a strong second set but the Cardinals responded back taking the second set as well. The Cardinals also took the third set as well the match. The Cardinals are currently on a four game winning streak and still remain undefeated in ACC Play.

Up Next: The Cardinals travel to face Duke Friday and Wake Forest on Sunday.

Football:

The Cardinals faced Boston College at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday. The Cardinals racked up 664 yards of total offense. Senior Seth Dawkins and Freshman Javian Hawkins led the Cardinals in receiving and rushing. Senior kicker Blanton Creque had a 41 yard field goal kick with 1:02 left which proved to be the game winner for the Cardinals. This was the first ACC win for the Cardinals since 2017.

Up Next: The Cardinals travel to #19 Wake Forest for a 7:30pm Saturday kick off.

Cross Country:

The men’s and women’s Cross Country team competed in the Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday. The men’s team led by Sophomore Emmanuel Cheboson. led the Cardinals who finished fifth in the 8k. The Cardinals men’s cross country team finished in second place overall. Sophomore Ivine Chemutai finished fourth in the 5K to lead the Cardinals women’s cross country team. The women’s team finished sixth with their combined scores.

Up Next: The Cardinals compete in Pre-Nationals on October 19th.

Softball:

The Cardinals hosted the Indiana Hoosiers in a Fall Season doubleheader. The Cardinals took game one. The second game didn’t get to be played out due to rain. (Stats for the first game will be posted as soon as the information has been released.)

Baseball:

The baseball team was defeated 5-3 by Dominican Winter League team in the Dominican Republic. The Cardinals were led by Sophomore Ben Bianco, who went 3-3 with a solo homerun. Luke Smith pitched four innings with only allowing one run on just three hits. Carter Lohman and Jared Poland pitched scoreless innings for the Cardinals out of the bullpen.

Up Next: The Cardinals will face Toros Del Este on Monday before coming home on Tuesday.

Rowing:

The Cardinals Rowing team hosted their annual Red and Black Regatta. They start the fall season October 19 in Boston Massachusetts.

Women’s Golf:

The Women’s Golf team starts the Illini Invitational Monday Morning at 9:30am and will play through Tuesday afternoon.

Men’s Basketball:

They host their annual Red-White Scrimmage Saturday at 1pm in the Yum Center.
