In addition to earning preseason number one rankings in three of the six major college baseball polls, Louisville baseball players are also gathering Preseason All-American nominations.
Reid Detmers was selected as a preseason All-American first team pitcher by D1Baseball.com, with Michael Kirian and Alex Binelas earning second-team honors as relief pitcher and third baseman, respectively.
Detmers is coming off arguably the most prolific season of any Louisville pitcher in school history. The then-sophomore broke Brendan McKay’s single-season strikeouts record with 167 K’s in 2019, and also tied the single-season wins record (13). He also posted a 2.79 ERA with a team-low .92 WHIP, allowing .177 batting in the process.
Alex Binelas is the lone Louisville fielder to earn All-American honors from D1Baseball.com, entering the 2020 season. The Wisconsin native burst onto the scene last year as Louisville’s top power hitter, leading the team with 14 home runs and .612 slugging. Binelas also delivered 14 doubles and a team-high five triples (including a game where he became the first Louisville player since 1998 to hit for the cycle), along with 59 RBIs and .291 batting with .995 OPS. Binelas, along with Detmers, were also selected as All-Americans by Perfect Game earlier this month.
With Michael McAvene getting drafted by the Chicago Cubs this past summer, Michael Kirian figures to be the shoe-in as Louisville’s next closer and top reliever in 2020. Kirian had a team-low 1.69 ERA with a 3-1 record and five saves in 2019, allowing .218 batting and striking out 42 batters to just nine walks.
Louisville’s 2020 season opens with a Valentine’s Day weekend series at Ole Miss, a rematch of last year’s two-game series that saw the Cardinals sweep the Rebels at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals and Rebels begin the series on February 14th at 5:00 p.m. ET, with Saturday and Sunday’s games set for 3:00 and 1:00 p.m. starts.
