Two Cards Earn More Preseason All-American Honors

Two Cards that have picked up quite a few preseason accolades heading into the 2020 season picked up some more yesterday. Sophomore infielder Alex Binelas and junior starting pitcher Reid Detmers we’re both named Preseason First Team All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Detmers and Binelas have been named preseason All-Americans by numerous other college baseball publications as well.

Detmers received numerous All-American honors after his 2019 season, picked as both a First and Second Team selection by many different publications. He was also named ACC Pitcher of the Year and was a semifinalist for two prestigious awards; the Dick Howser and Golden Spikes awards. Detmers had a great season statistically. He went 13-4 with a 2.78 ERA in 113.1 innings pitched. Detmers was a strikeout machine, collecting 167 of them against only 33 walks. Opponents only batted a paltry .177 against the southpaw.

Binelas emerged quickly as a power bat in his first season for the Cards. The Wisconsin native with the impressive beard provided the thunder in the middle of the Louisville lineup. He batted .291 with 14 homers, 14, doubles, 5 triples, and 59 RBI. He collected 60 hits overall and scored 54 runs. He also walked 27 times. The season that Binelas put together ended up with him being named a Freshman All-American, a All-ACC Second Team selection, and a place on the ACC All-Freshman Team.

Binelas, Detmers Earn NCBWA All-America Honors

The duo was named to the NCBWA First Team.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville baseball student-athletes Alex Binelas and Reid Detmers were honored once again on Thursday, as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its preseason All-America teams.

Binelas and Detmers were both first team selections. The two Cardinals were previously recognized by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball and Perfect Game, while Detmers also added All-America honors from Baseball America.

The 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, Detmers returns for his third season in a Louisville uniform in 2020. The southpaw was 13-4 with a 2.78 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 113.1 innings last year, setting the program’s single-season record for strikeouts and tying the mark for wins. Detmers garnered All-American recognition from six different services and was a Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Award semifinalist.

One of the top freshmen in the country in 2019, Binelas is coming off a debut campaign that saw him hit .291 with 14 doubles, 14 home runs and 59 RBIs on his way to Freshman All-America honors. The Oak Creek, Wis., native led the Cardinals in home runs and slugging percentage and was the first UofL freshman to hit 10 home runs in a season since Chris Dominguez in 2007.

Louisville opens the 2020 season Feb. 14 with a three-game series on the road at No. 18 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. The Cardinals’ home opener is set for Feb. 19 against Wright State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
