Two Cardinals Heading East To New York After WNBA Draft

Jazmine Jones and Kylee Shook were both selected tonight in the WNBA Draft. Jones was drafted 12th overall by the New York Liberty.

The very next pick the Liberty selected Jazmine’s teammate and former Cardinal C Kylee Shook.

They both join Sabrina Ionescu (1st pick) and Megan Walker from UConn as Liberty draft picks.

With Jazmine Jones being drafted, this makes the 3rd consecutive year that Louisville had a draftee. When Kylee Shook’s name was called, she and Jones marked the 2nd consecutive year multiple Louisville players were drafted in the same year.

ESPN WNBA Legend and analyst Rebecca Lobo gave her thoughts on Jazmine Jones during ESPN’s telecast. “Tremendous athlete, can defend on the perimeter, can get into the lane and score and finish…” said ESPN and WNBA analyst Rebecca Lobo. “This is a player who has a nice wnba body, skillset, athleticism she get to the rim, hit the mid range shot, slash to the basket…”

Jazmine Jones will fit almost perfectly in the backcourt of the New York  Liberty. With coach Walt Hopkins wanting to spread the floor, create driving lanes, and being able to switch defensively on the perimeter is taylormade for Jones. Jones is also considered a big guard that can switch or step out on pick and roll actions.

Shook, with her ability to protect the rim on defense and stretch the defense with her 3-point shooting on offense is as close to a perfect match for the Liberty as any team other than the Seattle Storm. She will bring the ability to be the rare stretch 5. Although, the Liberty may allow her to play at the 4 some.

This marks the fourth draft where Louisville has had multiple players drafted. Both Kylee and Jazmine, if they aren’t traded, will be joining former Louisville Cardinal Asia Durr in New York. New York drafted Asia with the 2nd overall pick in the 2019 draft. Asia Durr played in 18 games last season and started 15 of them. She averaged 9.7 ppg while shooting over 46% from the field. She is coming back from hip surgery in the offseason.

Coach Walz and his staff continue to work tirelessly on the recruiting trail in targeting not only talented young women, but ones with high character. Jazmine Jones and Kylee Shook becomes the 10th and 11th Louisville players drafted in the Jeff Walz era.

Check out some of the tweets of congrats to the two players below.
