Louisville MBB Turns Up The Heat On Recent KU De-Commit Sydney Curry

Recent Kansas de-commit, junior college big man Sydney Curry, is expected to garner a lot of attention. Louisville men’s basketball is a program that is expected to really turn up their recruitment efforts for the 6’8 260 lbs product of John A Logan College. This is the same college former UofL commit Jay Scrubb played for.

A native of Fort Wayne, IN, Curry is rated a consensus 3 Star prospect. His offers, outside that of Kansas include Maryland, Ole Miss, Seton Hall, and Texas A&M. However, it appears the Cards are about to offer Curry and put a full court press on for this young monster’s services. A visit to Louisville is rumored for this weekend.

As a freshman at John A Logan, Curry averaged 13.5 ppg and 8.3 rpg. He shot 73.9-percent from the field. Those stats earned him conference freshman of the year and all-conference honors. His final season in 2020-2021, Curry put up remarkably similar numbers. Averaging 13.1 ppg on 67.6-percent shooting with 8.3 rpg and 2 apg. He’s listed as a PF, but, if Louisville ends up landing him, I expect he will be a C in Mack’s system.

What does Sydney Curry bring to the Cards if UofL does indeed jump in full throttle on his recruitment and lands him? The answer is simple, a lot! Curry is only listed at 6’8, but he’s a muscular 260 lbs. His athleticism is excellent while his strength and toughness are unbelievable.

Curry isn’t a flashy post player with a ton of moves. He’s going to either back a guy down under the rim slowly and dunk on him or he’s going to make a couple quick moves to get to the basket and finish. He’s got a decent little jumper within 5 feet, but his greatest gift is he constantly dunks. He loves to dunk and is reminiscent of Trez in how he attacks the rim like it disrespected him. If Curry is on the block or in the paint, he shows raw power and skill that will make him tough to defend even at the ACC level.

He’s a relentless rebounder able to corral offensive boards even out of his area. His strength and athleticism should make him an absolute force on the backboard. With defensive rebounds he should be able to anchor and block out consistently and well. With offensive rebounds he can use his leaping ability to go over top or muscle his way in to grab the offensive board and get put-back.

Sydney Curry may be the most Chris Mack recruit of Chris Mack recruits. With the belief Louisville is about to go all in on his recruitment, he would be an excellent get for the staff. His toughness and physicality are already there. So, physically, he should be ready to go when he gets on campus. His skills are good around the rim, but I suspect that the staff, if they are able to get him, will work to really help develop his low post game and maybe add a jumper 10-15 feet out. Regardless, Sydney Curry is a truly intriguing prospect that if he does end up a Card, would bring a monster down low the likes of Trez or Chane.
