Scott Satterfield Media Day Press Conference Takeaways

University of Louisville head football coach Scott Satterfield met with the media on Saturday afternoon for media day at Cardinal Stadium. A variety of topics were discussed such as position battles, preseason camp, spring ball, etc. Here are my takeaways (quotes) from the Satterfield press conference.

Fall Camp

“Overall I thought it was a good solid day (first scrimmage). The energy was good.”

On turnovers: “you have to be able to cut loose and play. We’ve been stressing it all offseason and working on it in practice. Out of 140ish reps, the offense didn’t have any turnovers today.”

“I like the ways our guys are practicing. We preach that the guys need to practice like pros. The guys are taking care of each other and getting a lot of practice.”

Positional Tidbits

On running back battle: “I think the leader is (Jalen) Mitchell. He runs hard between the tackle and protects well. (Trevion) Cooley looked really good today. We’re pretty deep there. Hassan Hall ran hard today.”

On wide receiving room: “Braden Smith will play a ton this year, Justin Marshall has had a good camp, Tyler Harrell had the ability to play a lot. Those are the main guys. Huggins-Bruce and Werts will get opportunities. There are 6-7 core guys.”

On offensive line: “we have about 8 guys that we can rotate in and play. We have some great size, athleticism, and experience.”

On secondary: “the guys have good fundamentals and techniques. They’re talented players that can do alot of different things.”

Individual Players

On Tyler Harrell: “we had some good players ahead of him last year. He’s been one of the hardest workers in the offseason. He’s going to get the opportunity to make plays.”

On Marshon Ford: “he works everyday and never complains. Wherever we put him, he’s been willing. He’s so talented; he’s kind of like a receiver and kind of like a running back.”

Miscellaneous

On lack of interceptions last year: “you obviously want to get more takeaways. We had opportunities last year but the guys didn’t catch the ball. Tre Clark made a nice interception yesterday.”

On newcomers: “a lot of these guys expect to come in and contribute right away. Some of them will, but it takes a little bit of time to get more reps.”

On mindset after the losing record: “part of what we wanted to do is spend time with our guys. They have to know that you care about them. We’ve been able to come back and do those things. We grew up a lot last season.”

On reports of alliance between ACC-Big 10-PAC12: “I really don’t know anything about it. Until something does happen, it’s all speculation. There’s alot of things that I think could happen. I’d like to see the Louisville Cardinals win a lot of games.”

“We’ll be taking around 10-12 high school recruits in the 2022 class, but the number isn’t set in stone yet.”
