TWICA: October 4th

Welcome back Card fans, to This Week in Cardinal Athletics! An apology for there being no TWICA last week, but with that out of the way, let’s jump right into this!

Men’s Tennis

The Cardinals competed in the Drobac/Beeman invitational hosted by Michigan State this past week. In the first day, David Mizrahi won his first singles match against MSU’s Max Shelton. Day 2 of the invitational saw no wins from the Cardinals side. However, on the 3rd day, Louisville tallied 3 wins, as Mizrahi and Kyle Tang won their doubles match and also both won a singles match.

Both of the teams (Men’s and Women’s) opened their season at home, facing Xavier in a dual meet. Both teams also came away with a very convincing win, winning every event en route to a 179-78 victory for both squads! Also, special shoutout to freshman Eli Shoyat, who competed on the US National team at the 2021 FINA World Cup in Berlin, Germany this past week.

The Cards then returned home to face the 15th ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest on October 1st. This game too went into double overtime, and Louisville once again prevailed by a score of 2-1. The Cards were led by goals from Schneider and the game-winner from Mattie Tabor!

#3 Volleyball (14-0)

The Cardinals continued their insane 2021 season by once again sweeping their 2 opponents this past week (in fact, all but 2 of Louisville’s wins have come off of sweeps)! First off, the Cards traveled to Clemson to take on the Tigers on October 1st. The Cards were able to put them away rather easily 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-19), being led in kills by Anna DeBeer with 11, 4 aces from Elena Scott, and of course, 26 assists from Tori Dilfer.

Then, on October 3rd, the Cards traveled down to Atlanta, for a match with the 18th ranked Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. This one was a much more close battle, especially in a long 2nd set, but the Cards did eventually come away with the 3-0 sweep (25-15, 36-34, 25-22). The Cards were led here by 12 kills from DeBeer, 5 blocks a piece from Anna Stevenson and Amaya Tillman, 43 assists from Dilfer, and 11 digs from Scott.

This Week: Friday, October 8th Vs Boston College (7 PM)

Sunday, October 10th Vs Syracuse (1 PM)

Football (3-2)

The Cardinals traveled to now 19th ranked Wake Forest on October 2nd, and came away with the 37-34 loss. The Cards fought extremely hard however, and their future, I personally believe, is looking bright (and no I’m not going to discuss the big controversy from that game, it happened, now let’s leave it in the past and focus on the future). The Cards were led on offense by 309 yards passing (along with 2 touchdowns) from Malik Cunningham, 89 yards rushing from Jalen Mitchell, 61 yards rushing from Trevion Cooley, and 46 yards rushing (along with another 2 touchdowns) from Cunningham. The Cards were led on defense with an interception from Qwynnterrio Cole (along with one of the most confusing taunting penalties in history), and a sack a piece from Jack Fagot and Derek Dorsey.

This Week: Saturday, October 9th Vs Virginia (3 PM, ACC Network)

A special shoutout to 2 Cardinals for life, Lamar Jackson and Teddy Bridgewater, for at least giving us one quarter of the Cardinal bowl as the Ravens took on the Broncos (before Bridgewater went out with a concussion). Prayers up for a healthy recovery for Bridgewater, and congrats to Jackson for a brilliant performance and the Ravens’ 3rd win of the season!
