Ben Metzinger and Dalton Rushing each drove in three RBIs and knocked their 15th home runs of the season, as the seventh-ranked Louisville Cardinals (34-13-1) took a 7-2 victory over Indiana (22-26).
The win continues Louisville’s strong momentum since their series loss to Florida State last month. The Cardinals have won ten of their last 12 games, including wins over Kentucky, Vanderbilt, NC State, and Clemson.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, Rushing put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run home run into center field. Metzinger followed that up with an RBI double later in the inning to give Louisville a 3-1 lead.
After Indiana gained a run back in the top of the sixth, Louisville got a run back with a solo home run from Metzinger in the bottom half of the inning. Louisville would add three runs in the eighth inning to give the Cardinals the decisive score, including RBIs from both Metzinger and Rushing.
Batting from the leadoff spot, Metzinger went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Rushing finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run; both he and Metzinger currently lead the team with 15 home runs this season. Ben Bianco led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, while Levi Usher stole three bases with two walks to his total.
Carson Liggett earned his first win of the 2022 season with two shutout innings in relief, with Garrett Schmeltz (2.0 IP, 4 K), Tate Kuehner (1.0 IP), and Ryan Hawks (1.0 IP, 3 K) also delivering shutouts in their appearances.
Louisville continues this weekend with a trip to Blacksburg, Va., facing fifth-ranked Virginia Tech in a weekend series with huge postseason implications for the Cardinals.
