UofL football is scorching hot on the recruiting trail. The staff just had one of the biggest, if not the biggest, recruiting weekends in the history of the program. One of the most highly rated prospects to visit became the first to join the flock. 5 Star RB Rueben Owens has committed to the Cards.

Owens is a 5’11 190 lbs TX native that chose UofL over pretty much every elite school you could imagine. Some of the names he turned down in favor of UofL include Alabama, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. 247sports has Owens ranked as the 16th-best overall prospect in the 2023 class and the number 1 RB in all the land. Owens is, per 247sports, the second highest rated recruit in UofL football history behind Michael Bush since star ratings have been adapted.
Owens plays for El Campo High School in El Campo, TX. Last season, Owens toted the rock 248 times for 2989 yards and 46 TDs. He also contributed in the passing game with 15 receptions out of the backfield for 252 yards and 2 TDs. He averaged 12 yards a carry. In other words, he was absolutely dominant.
Owens is an incredible talent. As a runner, he exhibits excellent vision and patience. He waits for the hole to be opened by his offensive linemen and once it does, he bursts through with top-notch acceleration. It doesn’t take long for Owens to get to top speed. At top speed, he can easily outrun pursuit angles. When he’s running, it’s effortless. So much so, it almost looks like he’s running slow, but he’s not. He just runs so smoothly and effortlessly. Owens is ultimately a one-cut back, but he can make several jukes and cuts if defenders are near him unblocked. He can make anyone miss. As far as when a defender can get a hand on him, Owens can run through arm tackles and exhibits excellent balance that keeps him on his feet when defenders dive for his legs and feet. In other words, his stats are legit. Texas is a big time football state where every class is full of talent and Owens always looks like the best player on the field.
Rueben Owens will likely compete for the starting spot from day 1 and regardless will get a lot of carries. He’s got all the tools to be an NFL back and a day 1 or 2 draft pick. He will bring a home run hitter in the backfield and give UofL one of the deepest and most talented backfields they’ve ever had.
With the commitment of Rueben Owens, Louisville’s class is now ranked 8th nationally. If the class holds together, this will be UofL’s best recruiting class in history as far as rankings and the level of commits are concerned.
