Cards Gain A Dream Chaser: Guard TJ Robinson Becomes First 2024 Commit

On Monday afternoon, Coach Kenny Payne and staff picked up their first commitment of the 2024 class with the commitment of 3 Star Guard TJ Robinson from Montclair, New Jersey. TJ is 6’4 guard that plays both PG and SG. He chose the Cards over LSU, Georgetown, Kansas State, and others. He is 153rd-ranked player in 2024 class and number 4 player in the state of NJ.

Robinson plays for Pervis Ellison and the NJ Scholars on the AAU scene. He actually backs up 2023’s number 1 player DJ Wagner. With Wagner soon going to college, it is expected Robinson will ascend into the starting PG role for the Scholars.

An under the radar recruit, Robinson won’t be for much longer. Especially when you consider he’s had to play behind Wagner. It doesn’t mean he’s any less talented than Wagner. Robinson is an extremely quick guard that can get by defenders with relative ease. His handles are excellent as he can use a nice crossover to get defenders off balance.

Once Robinson gets by his defender, he can either get to the rim and finish or draw defenders and kick to cutters or bigs for layups, dunks, and mid-range jumpers. His vision is very good and he’s a willing passer.

Another trait I like is Robinson can effect the game off the ball. He doesn’t always have to have the basketball to be a contributor. As an off the ball player, Robinson proves he knows where to be offensively to get open shots. Also, Robinson is a very effective catch-and-shoot guard which bodes well for him playing multiple roles for Coach Kenny Payne.

I suspect TJ Robinson is being penciled in as a PG for Coach Payne. However, there are other PGs UofL is recruiting heavily in the 2024 class and the versatility and ability of Robinson to be a playmaker and shot maker on the wing rather than on the point allows Coach Payne and staff to continue their hot pursuit of a guy like Elliot Cadeau to pair with Robinson. Regardless, having Robinson in the fold is a nice get. A lot of people will see a 3 Star PG and scoff, but it is important to remember he’s backing up a premiere PG on his AAU team. I think TJ Robinson could see a big jump in rankings as he begins to get more time as a starter. Look at the highlights I included and judge for yourself.
