UofL WBB Recap: Cards Outlast The Blue Demons

Pregame Notes:

Good night Card Nation, and happy National Signing Day for the Louisville football team. New Head Coach Jeff Brohm, (damn that felt good to write) was able to keep most of the recruiting class together and also added a few surprises.

Tonight though, is about the ladies on the hardwood floor. Louisville takes on the high-scoring DePaul Blue Demons. The last time these two teams met up, Louisville scored a school-record 116 points and were led by HVL and Kianna Smith with 21 points each. DePaul has a slight all-time series lead 17-16.

1st Quarter:

Chrislyn Carr gave the Cards the early lead with a 3-ball. The game started at an accelerated pace as the points were being put on the board at a hasty pace. Louisville, however, used a 9-0 run to take a 20-9 lead midway through the quarter. Just as hasty as the scoring was to begin the quarter, the scoring came to screeching halt. Both teams scored 5 points in the last 5 mins, as Louisville took a 25-14 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

2nd Quarter:

Morgan Jones hit an open mid-range jumper off of beautiful ball movement by the Cards. Louisville kept up their relentless pressure for most of the quarter. They were able to stretch the lead to 17 on a couple of occasions. Louisville was able to extend it to a 20-point lead before a buzzer beater cut the lead back to 17 (46-29) heading into intermission.

3rd Quarter:

Louisville started the quarter pretty good. They were able to get the lead back to 20. DePaul, however, started to play smarter and more aggressive on both ends of the floor. Louisville only managed to score 12 points in the quarter and the Blue Demons used a 10-2 run to cut the Cards lead to single digits. Louisville held a 58-49 lead heading into the final quarter.

4th Quarter:

DePaul kept up their aggressive defensive pressure, especially on Hailey Van Lith. DePaul fought all the way to get to within 4 points, but HVL came alive. Hailey Van Lith went 4-4 to extend the lead back to double-digits and the Cards never allowed DePaul to get any closer. Louisville showed poise as they were able to execute offensively while taking time off the clock and continued to force DePaul into taking tough shots. Louisville beats DePaul 81-67 and ties the series at 17 games a piece.

Post Game Notes:

The Cards improved to 10-4 on the season. They controlled a little over half the game, but they allowed DePaul to make a run over a 7 minute stretch that saw a 20-point lead cut to as low as 4 points. Louisville, especially HVL, came alive to help extend the lead back to double-digits. Louisville was led in scoring by Chrislyn Carr with 21 points. She also led both teams with a career high 17 rebounds. Louisville wrapped up their non-conference schedule at 9-4. The Cards got 11 points from Russell, which ties her career high. UofL used their size advantage against the smaller DePaul to the tone of 38 points in the paint. The Cards can now focus solely on their pursuit of another ACC regular season title.

Next Opponent:

The Cards return home to host Syracuse on Thursday, December 29th at 7:00 pm.
