Welcome Cardinal Fans! Here is your weekly recap in Cardinal Athletics for the week of August 19th – August 27th. Fall sports have started back up with a sensational week!
Women’s Soccer:
Karen Ferguson-Dayes and the women’s soccer team started the 2023 season with 2-0 loss to Xavier in Cincinnati. The Cards led the shots on goal 9-8, but just couldn’t connect. Xavier scored early in each half and the Cardinals couldn’t make the comeback.
The women’s soccer team stayed in Ohio for their second game against the Dayton Flyers. Dayton scored early in the game to take the 1-0 lead. The Cards got on the board in 59th minute with a goal from Ravin Alexander to tie the game at 1-1. The Flyers scored in the 86th minute to take the victory over the Cardinals.
The Cardinals opened a three-game homestand on Sunday against Northern Kentucky. They held an advantage of 7-3 with shots on goal, but the Cardinals and Norse played to a 0-0 draw. Sophomore Maya Maxwell lead the Cardinals with 2 shots on the goal.
Up Next: The Cardinals host Illinois on Thursday Night at 7:30 p.m. and Central Michigan Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
Men’s Soccer:
The Cardinals opened the 2023 season at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium against #16 Tulsa. The Cardinals took advantage of having 7 shots on goal with a goal in the 74th minute from Konstantinos Georgallides. The Cardinals defense played a stellar end of the game and held Golden Knights to 0 shots on the goal.
Up Next: The Cardinals face Bellarmine on Monday night at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
#9 Field Hockey:
The #9 Field Hockey Team kicked off the 2023 season a little later than expected. The Cardinals were supposed to kick off on Friday evening, but instead played Saturday morning due to the bad weather in the area. The Cardinals took the early 1-0 lead behind a score from Julie Kouijzer. Northeastern joined in the scoring shortly after, tying it 1-1 in beginning of the 2nd quarter. The Cardinals entered the 2nd half with 9-4 shots on the goal advantage. Aimee Plumb, after a scoreless 3rd quarter, started the scoring again in the 4th quarter to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Shortly after, Chloe Plumb added her 1st career goal to give the Cardinals 3-1 victory.
The Cardinals traveled to Evanston, Illinois for a Top Ten Matchup agains #2 Northwestern Wildcats. The Cardinals took down the Big Ten favorite 1-0. The Cardinals only had 1 shot on goal and they took advantage of it with a goal from Emilia Kaczmarczyk. #2 Northwestern led the shots on goal 10-1 and corner opportunities 8-2.
Up Next: The Cardinals travel to Pennsylvania for the next 2 matches against Princeton on Friday Morning and the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.
#4 Volleyball:
The #4 Cardinals opened up their 2023 season with back to back sweeps of Troy and #21 Washington State. Senior Anna DeBeer lead the Cardinals with 25 kills over the 2 games including 17 in victory over #21 Washington State. The Cardinals came into the Wright State game on Sunday just needing to win so they could sweep the Cardinal Classic for another year. Wright State came out swinging taking the first set 25-20. Senior Anna DeBeer continued her streak of double-digit kills with 19.
Up Next: The Cardinals now get a little break after 3 matches in 3 days. The Cardinals hit the road on Friday to Columbia, Missouri for the Mizzou Invitational. The Cards face South Dakota at 2 p.m. on Friday, Northern Kentucky Saturday at Noon, and host Missouri Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
