UofL Football Recap: Cards Blank Murray State in Coach Brohm’s Home Opener

Pregame Notes:

Good evening Card Nation. The Jeff Brohm Era in Louisville is off to a 1-0 start and looking to improve to 2-0 against Murray State. Louisville is coming off 39-34 come from behind victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Louisville currently holds a 6-game winning streak vs the Racers and will look to extend that streak tonight.

1st Quarter:

The Cards started the quarter with a 3-&-out on defense. On offense, Coleman made a huge grab for yards just as it looked like the Cards were going to suffer the same fate as the Racers on their first possession. UofL capped off the drive with a 12-yard rush TD by Jamari Thrash.  The Louisville defense continue to look good all quarter as they were able to get a sack and a ton of pressure on the Murray State QB.

2nd Quarter:

The Cards began the quarter in scoring position and after a few plays Isaac Guerendo scored from 1-yard in. The Louisville defense continued to pitch a shutout and the Cards continued to pile on the points. Plummer threw 2 interceptions in the quarter, but the defense continued to stay the course. Louisville scored 21 points in the quarter; a 73-yard catch and run for Jamari Thrash gave Louisville a 21-0 lead and Jawhar Jordan, not to be outdone, scored on a 72-yard run to put the Cards up 28-0. The Cards took a 28-0 lead into the half.

Halftime Stats:

T.O.P:  11:23

Passing Yards: 202

Rushing Yards: 162

Sacks:1

T.Os: 0

3rd Quarter:

UofL had an abysmal first drive. It ultimately ended in a punt, but a holding call brought back what would’ve been a 75-yard Jawhar touchdown run. Another holding penalty negated a 3rd down conversion and an illegal formation canceled a muffed punt by Murray State. The Cards got their first forced turnover of the game on a fumble recovery by safety Devin Neal. Jordan finally hit pay dirt, this time on a 1-yard run. Amari Huggins-Bruce added a 6-yard rush that gave the Cards a 42-0 lead. In a quarter that saw Louisville force 3 turnovers and 3 quarterbacks play, the Cards maintained the momentum heading into the final quarter.

4th Quarter:

True freshman Keyjuan Brown scored on a 4-yard run for his first touchdown as a Card and put the Cards up 49-0. Harrison Bailey connected on a 34-yard pass with the well-traveled TE Joey Gatewood to put the Cards up 56-0. UofL got some reps for just about everyone healthy on the roster and were still able to match the intensity and effort from the starters. The Cards beat Murray State 56-0.

Post Game Notes:

Louisville put together 4 really good quarters of complimentary football and came away with a huge win tonight. Plummer led all passers with 247 yards, yes I said all. I think Coach Brohm played nine QBs tonight. Jawhar Jordan led all rushers with 135 yards on just 7 carries. Coach Brohm still has a lot to work on and tighten up before the business trip to Indianapolis. The defense played fast all night and pitched a shutout. The Cards will face Indiana next Saturday, September 16 in Indianapolis.
