Here is the weekly recap of what happened This Week In Cardinal Athletics.
Women’s Soccer (1-4):
The Cardinal women’s soccer team went 1-1 on this week. They were able to pick up their first win on Sunday against Central Michigan with a 3-0 win. The Cardinals were led in scoring by freshman Molly Cochran, who scored twice. The Cardinals also led the Chippewas 9-1 in shots on goal. The Cardinals then finished the week with losing to Indiana on Thursday with a score of 2-0.
Up Next: The Cardinals host Wyoming on Sunday at 5:30 pm and Virginia on Saturday at 7 pm.
#2 Volleyball (7-0):
The Cardinals volleyball team continued their dominance with a demanding sweep of Missouri. They also faced a very solid Dayton Flyers team that took the Cardinals to their first five set match of the season. Senior Anna DeBeer had another stellar week for the Cardinals. Anna tied her career high with 24 kills during Wednesday’s match. The Cardinals as a team also had the highest total of kills with 63.
Up Next: The Cardinals host #12 Penn State at the L&N Credit Union Arena on Sunday at 1 pm. They then face #19 Kentucky on Wednesday in the Yum Center.
#5 Field Hockey (5-0):
The Cardinals field hockey team continued their great start to the season. They finished their Pennsylvania road trip with a 2-1 victory over Pennsylvania University. Freshmen Tyler Everslage and Lauren Masters scored both the Cardinals’ Goals. The Cardinals then returned home to face #18 Ohio State. Senior Aimee Plumb, led the Cardinals with 2 goals that helped the Cardinals to the 2-1 victory over the Buckeyes.
Up Next: The Cardinals host VCU on Sunday at noon and then travel to Chapel Hill on Friday to face UNC at 3 pm.
The Women’s golf team started off the 2023 season competing in the Boilermaker Classic. Graduate Senior Hana Ryskova led the Cardinals shooting a six under par. The Cardinals finished in 4th place in the event and finished 12 over par as a team.
Up Next: The Cardinals are off this week before competing in the Mason Rudolph Invitational (Vanderbilt) on the 22nd.
#7 Men’s Soccer (4-0-1)
Coach John Michael Hayden and the Cardinals had an eventful week with top twenty matchups. On Tuesday, the Cardinals hosted #19 Kentucky. The Cardinals jumped out with a 2-0 lead and never looked back. They took down Kentucky 4-2. Then, the Cardinals traveled to #4 Syracuse for the ACC Opener. Reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week Gage Guerra scored early and scored the last goal to give the Cards the draw against the Cuse. The Cards evened the draw Friday night. They are out to the best start in school history through the five games.
