TWICA 2023 – September 10th – September 16th

Welcome back to another week in Cardinal Athletics.

Women’s Soccer (1-4-4):

The Cardinal women’s soccer team had two matches this week against Wyoming and Virginia. The Cardinals tied in both matches. On Sunday, Wyoming came to town to face the Cardinals. The Cowgirls started the scoring and the Cardinals had an answer every time. The Cardinals and Cowgirls tied 2-2. Then, #20 Virginia came into town looking for another victory over the Cardinals. Lucy Roberts started the scoring for the Cardinals in the 57th min and the Cavaliers answered back in the 79th min to tie the game.

Up Next: The Cardinals host Pittsburgh on Thursday at 8 pm.

#2 Volleyball (9-0):

The Cardinals volleyball team continued their dominance with a demanding sweep of two Top 25 opponents by taking down #12 Penn State on Sunday and #21 UK on Wednesday. Senior Anna DeBeer, reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week, showed why she was a force to contend with by the 10 kills against Penn State and nine kills against UK. The UCLA Transfe,  Charitie Luper, also contributed with a career high of 13 kills against UK. They then faced 5th-ranked Stanford today at the Yum Center. While the game started off very well with the Cards winning the first two sets, Stanford didn’t fold and stormed back to take the match 3-2. DeBeer had another admirable effort with 17 kills and 2 blocks. Luper continued her strong start in a Cardinal uni with 12 kills and 2 aces.

Up Next: The Cards face Syracuse to start ACC Play on Friday in the L&N Credit Union Arena at 7 pm.

#5 Field Hockey (6-1):

The Cardinals field hockey team continued the home stretch hosting the VCU Rams. The Cardinals needed an overtime goal from Minna Tremonti to give them the victory 2-1. The Cardinals then traveled to #2 North Carolina on Friday. The #2 Tar Heels came out swinging and they never looked back. The Cardinals were outshot with goals, 9-6 and lost 2-0. The Cardinals just couldn’t get a quality look for a goal.

Up Next: The Cardinals host JMU on Friday for a 5 pm match.

Women’s Golf:

The Cardinals were off this week and will be competing in the Mason Rudolph Invitational (Vanderbilt) this Saturday.

Men’s Golf:

The 2023 mens golf team started their season competiting in their first tournament, the Valero Texas Collegiate hosted by the University of Texas San Antonio. The Cardinals finished 25 over par. Senior Max Kennedy led the Cardinals shooting a 2 over par.

#5 Men’s Soccer (4-1-1):

Coach John Michael Hayden and the Cardinals hosted Virginia Tech on Friday night. For the first time, the Cardinals came up on the losing end with goal by Virginia Tech’s, Oliver Roche in the 87th minute. The Hokies outplayed the Cardinals in every statistical category in the 2-1 victory. This was first time the Cardinals didn’t lead in every stat. The Cardinals’ Quinton Elliot got the only goal in 5th minute.

Up Next: The Cards travel to Evansville for a match against Evansville on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
