This weekend Holly Aprile and the Louisville Cardinal Softball program will continue their early season road trip, setting their sights on Coastal Carolina. This weekend it is the Battle at the Beach in Conway, South Carolina. After starting 10-1, the best start to a season in over a decade, the softball community beginning to take note. Though not yet ranked in any major polls, the Cardinals, are garnering attention and have received a smatter of votes in some. Another dominating performance this weekend and I can’t see how the Cards will be left out of the Top 25. It has been fantastic to watch young players like Brooke Gray get the confidence they need heading into a tough conference schedule. While transfers like Riley Frizell have found the sweet spot in their new home.
The Competition
Coastal Carolina: This will be the first meeting between the Cardinals and the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina has shown inconsistency early in the season. They kicked off 2024 by hosting the Kickin’ Chicken Classic, sweeping it with a 4-0 record. However, their fortunes reversed on the road the following weekend, where they went 0-4.
Bowling Green: The Cardinals hold a 3-1 advantage all-time over the Falcons. The most recent time they played, the Cards won a pitcher’s duel, 1-0 at Ulmer Stadium in 2017. Bowling Green, yet to play this season, is looking to rebound from a 9-41 record last year, with Coach Fenton-Bockbrader, in her second year at the helm of her alma mater, aiming for a turnaround in 2024.
Furman: The Paladins, yet to face the Cardinals, are entering the tournament with the only other record above .500 at 7-2. Pitcher Sierra Tufts leads them with a 4-0 record and a 1.83 ERA.
