Welcome back for another week of “This Week In Cardinal Athletics” for the week of September 23rd – September 29th.

#5 Volleyball (10-2)

Volleyball had a challenging week of facing some of the top teams in the country. On Friday, the Cardinals started conference play with hosting California. Senior Anna DeBeer and Sofia Maldonado-Diaz recorded 8 kills in the sweep of the Golden Bears (25-13, 25-15, 25-21). Elena Scott had 26 digs to help the Cardinals. Then, on Sunday, the Cardinals hosted #2 Stanford and swept them in three sets(25-16, 25-23, 25-22). Senior Charitie Luper had a season high 18 kills and also the team had 44 Kills.

Up Next: The Cardinals host Clemson on Friday and Georgia Tech on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer (4-3-2):

The Cardinals had a very rough week with falling to UAB 2-1 despite leading all of the offensive categories. UAB jumped out with a goal in the 52nd minute. The Cardinals answered with a header goal 10 minutes later from Leon Kondic. UAB scored few minutes later and that ended up being the game-winner.

On Sunday, the Cardinals traveled to Boston to face Boston College. Boston College led the Cardinals in every offensive category, but the Cardinals scored first with Gage Guerra’s goal which got the 1-0 lead. Then Boston College came back with a goal of their own in the 86th minute which caused the match to go to a 1-1 draw. The Cardinals were held to their lowest amount of shots on goal.

Up Next: The team travels to California on Thursday at 6pm.

Women’s Soccer (6-3-2):

The Cardinals women’s soccer team had a tough week with a HUGE loss to Virginia Tech. The match started with a defensive battle before Virginia Tech opened scoring with two goals to end the first half. Brooke Dardano scored the Cardinals only goal as Virginia Tech scored three more goals in the second half.

NC State came to town on Sunday and the Cardinals dropped them 1-0 with a goal from Mackenzie Geigle. The Cardinals had three straight corners to start the second half and then on the third corner, Madison worked her magic to give the Cardinals the victory.

Up Next: Cardinals will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to face North Carolina on Thursday night before traveling down the road on Sunday for a match with Duke.

#13 Field Hockey (5-5): 

The field hockey team hosted #12 Boston College on Friday in an ACC match. Boston College held 12-9 advantages in shots and 3-2 edge in corners. The Cardinals just couldn’t find the goal through the Eagles’ defense.

The Cardinals traveled to Columbus, Ohio to face #4 Ohio State. The Cardinals fell 4-3 to the Buckeyes. Ohio State had the advantage in every offensive category. The Cardinals got up early and Ohio State came storming back and showed why they are one of the top offensive teams in the country.

Up Next: The Cardinals travel to Syracuse on Friday at 4pm and then travel to Charlottesville, Virginia on Sunday 12pm.
