Cards Continue to Stack Their Deck in the Portal With Addition of Ryan Conwell

The portal has been very kind to Coach Pat Kelsey as he seeks to stack the deck against the ACC and the rest of the country next season. Tonight, he continued stacking the deck by secured the commitment of Xavier transfer Ryan Conwell. Conwell is ranked as a 4 Star portal prospect by 247sports.

Conwell is a junior who previously played at South Florida and Indiana State before Xavier. Last season, he scored 16.5 points per game, 2.7 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 45-percent from the field and 41.3-percent from the arc. For his career, Conwell averaged 13 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game, 2.3 assists per game, and 1.1 rebounds per game on 44.7-percent shooting and 39.3-percent from the arc.

Conwell is a 6’4 195 lbs guard that is a prototype Kelsey guard. His game is either to get to the rim to score or knock down a long-range shot. The thing that stands out about Conwell as a driver is his quickness, especially a quick first step. Once he gets to the rim, he can make tough finishes and finish through contact. His size helps contribute to his ability to finish around the rim. As a shooter, Conwell is a sniper. He can get open in a variety of ways; off screens, step-backs, off rhythm dribbles, and off the catch. He’s got a quick release with NBA range. Defensively, he utilizes his same quickness to stick with his man and has active hands that disrupt opposing offenses.

With the commitment of Ryan Conwell, UofL now has arguably a top 3 backcourt in college basketball heading into next season. Each guard they have is very similar and complimentary. Conwell is a walking bucket. He’s either going to take his defender on a ride to the basket or shoot a 3 and drain it in his face. He understands how to move without the ball and get open. This is an a talent much desired by Pat Kelsey for the type of offense he runs. You can’t help but believe UofL is a top 10 team heading into next year with the addition of Ryan Conwell.
