This Week In Cardinals Athletics: September 2nd-September 7th

Welcome back for another edition of This Week In Cardinal Athletics for the week of September 2nd – September 7th .

#3 Volleyball (4-0): Sophomore Payton Petersen had a career-high 20 kills to lead the No. 3-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18) win over Illinois Sunday afternoon in the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals as team had 63 kills & 18 blocks as well. 

Up Next: Cards will hit the road to face #2 Texas at the Showdown at the Net on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Dickie Arena in Ft. Worth.

Men’s Soccer (4-0): HUGE UPSET on Friday Afternoon inside Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The last time the Cards beat the No. 1 team in the country was in April 2021, when they took down top-ranked Clemson 2-1 inside Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals behind Redshirt sophomore Chase Vazquez’s goal defeated #1 Stanford 1-0. 

Up Next: Tuesday, Sept. 9, when they head on the road to play at Ohio State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network +.

Women’s Soccer (7-1): Women’s Soccer picked up 2 wins on the weekend. First, they toppled Kent State (2-2-2) 8-0 Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Sophomore Amelia Swinarski recorded a hat trick tonight for the Cards and tied a career high with six points.

Next, they defeated Dayton 2-0 on Sunday evening. The Cardinals finished its six-game homestand undefeated as they won all six games and did so in impressive fashion. Louisville outscored its opponents 36-2 over the homestand and collected a clean slate in five of the six games.

Up Next: Louisville heads down to Tallahassee to face #6 Florida State on Thursday at 7pm on ACCN Extra. 

Field Hockey (3-1):  Field Hockey had a up & down week this week with falling to Drexel before defeating Indiana on Sunday. The Cardinals had 5 different players score in the victory over Indiana. The Drexel match the Cardinals led in every offensive category but just couldn’t get over the hump against the dragons. 

Up Next: Friday 12th against No. 1 and defending national champion Northwestern visits! Get out & support them!
