The third ranked Cardinals hosted the sixth ranked Wildcats at the KFC YUM! Center on Thursday evening. In front of nearly 11,000 fans, The Cards fell in 5 sets, 3-2.
I know they would never admit it, but in my opinion, the Cards just looked exhausted. I feel like after the first three sets, they just ran out of gas. UK scored 40 of the last 59 points. I believe the travel and playing their fifth match in eight days against three nationally ranked teams, was just too much this early in the season. The rivalry game came at the exact wrong time if you cheer for the team in the red. But the invitation to play Texas in the Shriners Children’s Showdown (on Wed, Sept 10th) came after the games against Creighton (Fri, Sept 12th), UNI (Sat, Sept 13th), Rice (Sun, Sept 14th) and UK (Thurs, Sept 18th) were already on the schedule and you just can’t turn down the invite to play 2nd ranked Texas.
But let’s also not neglect the fact that Kentucky is a really good team lead by All-American, Brooklyn, DeLeye. I wouldn’t be shocked to see UK, Texas, Nebraska and the Cards in the Final Four.
