(Press Release: Garett Wall)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Kade McClure dealt seven strong innings while three different Cardinals had two hits as the No. 5 Louisville baseball team breezed past Cincinnati for a 7-1 win on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Cardinals (36-9) extended their winning streak to six games and improved to 29-1 at home this season. Louisville moved to 22-2 in non-conference games in 2016 while also winning its 12th straight against the Bearcats (21-23-1).

McClure, a righthander from Mentor, Ohio, allowed only one run on six hits and finished with four strikeouts with just one walk to move to 9-0 in his 10 starts this season. Tuesday’s outing marked the second straight week McClure has worked a career-best seven innings and the seventh time this season he has surrendered no more than one earned run in a start.

Regional Championship Today!

Baseball

Today at approx. 4pm on ESPNU, the baseball Cards will take the field against either Kansas or Uk. The Cards defeated Kansas 6-3 in the regional game yesterday and by doing so earn a berth to the finals. Kentucky however has had the Cards number this season winning 8-3 in Lexington and beating the Cards at home 4-2. I believe Kansas will get it going late and win. The Cards will not be facing either teams ace as they were both used yesterday. If the winner of KU/uk defeats the Cards tonight, there will be a final game tomorrow night at 7 at Jim Patterson Stadium. Tickets are cheap so go fill up this magnificent ballpark.

For the Cards to defeat Kansas tonight they will need to execute on defense better. The Cards seemed to struggle yesterday a little with errors, mistakes which loaded the bases at least three times for Kansas yesterday. Even though most think we would have won by more if Kidston was taken out, he improved to 8-0 with the win and showed great resolve despite his mistakes. No offense to the Kansas team, I have friends who follow them for media purposes, but if they were a decent hitting team we would have lost yesterday. For the Cards to beat uk tonight they will have to rely on keeping the ball in the park. Whereas UL is a great small-ball team, uk is a great long-ball team. The Cards gave up 0 HR’s yesterday so that will be key to repeat again tonight. Win or lose the Cards should be ok as Funkhouser would take the mound tomorrow night if the cards are beaten. The Cards will host Super Regional action if they win this regional. Stay tuned to CSZ for times and dates as they become available.

Go Cards!

Louisville Baseball Tabbed as AAC Favorite by Conference Coaches

Gardner chosen as American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year as six Cardinals earn honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following its record-setting 2013 season, the Louisville baseball team will enter 2014 as the unanimous favorite to win the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship while Cardinals’ senior outfielder Jeff Gardner was selected as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year on Monday.

Louisville, which won its fourth Big East regular season championship in five years and advanced to the College World Series for the second time in school history last season, received all eight possible first-place votes and 64 points overall in the preseason poll of the conference’s head coaches announced on Monday by the league. The Cardinals, ranked No. 8 in last week’s Collegiate Baseball newspaper preseason poll, was also tabbed as the preseason favorite in the Big East Conference last season before eventually winning the regular season title and a school record 51 games overall.

Following Louisville in Monday’s preseason poll was Houston, UCF and Connecticut in a three-way tie for second place with 47 points each. USF rounded out the top five with 34 points, while the final four spots in the preseason conference rundown were Memphis (30), Rutgers (27), Cincinnati (18) and Temple (8).
