Cardinal News & Notes: Thursday Morning Edition

*Football: In the last week, the UofL football team has added two new transfers to the team from the University of Florida. Robert Clark and Gerald Christian will have to sit out the 2012 season, but will be ready to play in 2013. Clark was a 3* CB coming out of high school, but has played WR in college. Other than Florida, he had offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, USF, Vanderbilt, WVU, Wisconsin, and Auburn.  

Gerald Christian was a 4* TE  coming out of high school and was rated as the #3 player in the nation for his position. Other than Florida, he had offers from Boston College, Georgia, West Virginia, Florida State, Kentucky, Miami (FL), Ohio State, South Carolina, USF, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

*Men’s Basketball: Peyton Siva was named one of the 20 finalists for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. The list started with 60 and has now been cut to 20. The list will be cut to 10 in early February. The men’s basketball team faces Notre Dame this Saturday at 4:00 at the KFC Yum! Center.

*Baseball: In the Big East preseason poll done by the coaches, UofL was picked to finish in 2nd place, behind only St. John’s. Junior pitcher Justin Amlung was was picked as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year and senior Stewart Ijames was on the preseason All-Big East team. The 15th ranked Cardinals open their season in Clearwater, FL on February 17 against Minnesota at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.  

*Men’s Tennis: In the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings of the 2012 spring season, the Cards were ranked 30th in the team rankings. Andrew Carter and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer are ranked 24th, and Carter is ranked 113th in singles. UofL opens dual match play January 19 when they host Austin Peay and Xavier at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

*Women’s Tennis: Sophomore Rebecca Shine is ranked 103rd in the first 2012 spring season rankings. It is the highest national ranking for a UofL women’s singles player. The first doubles invitational of 2012 is in Bloomington, IN on January 14.
