This Saturday, the Cards (13-2, 1-1) will try to win their second Big East game in a row as they host Notre Dame (9-6, 1-1) at 4:00 at the KFC Yum! Center. After losses to Georgetown and Kentucky, UofL came back strong on Tuesday with a 73-58 win at St. John’s. This is the second game in a four game stretch that the Cards need to win because of the quality of oppenents before the schedule difficulty picks up.
Notre Dame comes in at 1-1 in Big East play. They beat Pittsburgh 72-59 and lost at Cincinnati on Wednesday 71-55. They are 1-3 against ranked teams this season, with the one win being the Pittsburgh game. Their 3 losses were against Missouri (87-58), Gonzaga (73-53), and Indiana (69-58).
This season has not gone as planned for the Irish. Their best player, senior Tim Abromaitis, started the season with a 4 game suspension because of an NCAA violation. He returned for two games, and then tore his ACL in practice and is out for the season. As as sophomore, he averaged 16.1 ppg, and 15.4 ppg as a junior. At 6’8, he was a tough matchup for anyone. His loss has really affected the Fighting Irish, and it will probably continue to do so.
Eric Atkins (13.5 ppg) and Jerian Grant (13.1) are now the two leading scorers for Notre Dame. Atkins is a 6’1 sophomore guard from Maryland and Grant is a 6’5 sophomore guard from Maryland. Jack Cooley is very similar to former Notre Dame star Luke Harangody. He almost averages a double-double with 9.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He also resembles him in another way…
The game tips off at 4:00 and can be seen on ESPN U. In case you forgot about this (no chance), here is a video of Kyle Kuric from last year’s Notre Dame game.
