Stephan Van Treese, a 6’8 Junior from Indianapolis, IN, was granted his release today and will leave the UofL program. In 52 career games with the Cards, he averaged 2.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Although those are not big numbers, no one ever questioned his effort when he was on the floor.
He was limited to just 3 games this past season before a knee injury caused him to miss the rest of the year. Without a proven backup to Gorgui Dieng, Van Treese was expected to play a significant role in giving Dieng a break and coming in to battle on the boards and make hustle plays like he usually did.
This should clear up the confusion about the number of scholarships for the team. With the recent signing of Montrezl Harrell, fans were unsure where that scholarship would come from, and now we know. It hasn’t been said where Van Treese will transfer to, but we wish him the best of luck in the future. Go Cards!
