The Louisville Cardinals men and women’s soccer teams, volleyball team, and field hockey team were all in action this yesterday both in away and home games. The men’s soccer team, in a game that was televised live on WHAS-11, took on arch-rival Kentucky at Cardinal Park. After a 90 minute, well fought game, the Cards fell to the Cats 1-0. In the first half the Cards took three shots, each missed. The Cards come out in the second half strong, but couldn’t land a goal to tie the game. Despite the loss and the cool weather, Fans were cheering loud for the Cards at tonight’s Red Out game.The Cards take on Ohio State next on Sept. 18th, 7pm, at Cardinal Park.
The women’s soccer team opened their BIG EAST conference schedule with an away game against Norte Dame. Junior Angelika Uremovich (3) scored her team-leading seventh goal in the 89th minute but it wasn’t enough as the Cards fell short, losing by a final score of 2-1. With the loss, the teams record now stands at 5-2 overall. The team continues BIG EAST play with another conference game at DePaul Sunday before returning home Friday, Sept. 21st to take on Syracuse.
The Cardinals volleyball team brought a six game winning streak into Friday nights match against Middle Tennessee State University at the KFC Yum! Center. The No.12-ranked were down early in the first set, trailing 13-9. Eventually, the Cards took a 20-19 lead before scoring five straight points to win the set 25-19. The second set completely belonged to the Cards as they led 13-7 and out of a MTSU timeout went on an impressive run to win the set 25-11. The third set was closer as the Blue Raiders of MTSU were down only 18-15 before committing five errors and surrendering two more points on a Tanya Lukyanenko (11) kill and Katie George (5) tip to lose the set 25-19 and the game. The Cards received significant contributions from several players including senior Lola Arslanbekova (9) who led the team with 11 kills, Caitlin Welch (1) who led the team with 16 digs, and Hannah Kvitle (3) who led the team with 19 assists. The win advances the Cardinals winning streak to seven and improves their record to 9-1. The Cardinals return to action Saturday with a pair of games at the KFC Yum! Center against UNLV (11am) and Miami (7:30).
The field hockey team played the third game of their road trip Friday against Central Michigan. Becca Maddock and Elisa Garcia provided first half scoring contributions and the game was tied 2-2 at half. The game remained tied until in the second overtime, Sophomore Alyssa Voelmle, scored the game winning goal to lift the Cards to a 3-2 victory. With the win, the team improves to 5-2 overall. The Cardinals next home game is Friday, Sept.21st at 6pm against Georgetown.
